“Baarle, een geografische puzzel 🇳🇱🧩🇧🇪🧩”

Je staat hier midden in het centrum voor de (Belgische) St. Remigiuskerk. Je vind hier een grenspaal en een plaquette. Dit is een getrouwe kopie van de officiële grenspalen en is hier in 1976 geplaatst ter herinnering aan de officiële vaststelling van de grens tussen Nederland en België tussen grenspaal 214 en 215. Deze grenspaal staat symbool voor alle internationale kruispunten binnen de Baarles. Op deze grenspaal staan beide nummers vermeld en aan iedere kant is de nationale Leeuw afgebeeld.

 In the middle of the center, in front of St. Remigius Church , there is a border post and a plaque. This is a faithful copy of the official border posts and was placed here in 1976 as a reminder of the official determination of the border between the Netherlands and Belgium between border posts 214 and 215. This border marker symbolizes all international intersections within the Baarles . Both numbers are stated on this border post and the national lion is depicted on each side. 

Recht tegenover de grenspaal, precies in de grenslijn, ligt een plaquette. Deze is hier in 1996 gelegd ter gelegenheid van de officiële vaststelling van de enclavegrenzen. Sindsdien zijn de enclavegrenzen ook officiële “rijksgrenzen”. 

Right across the border post, exactly in the border line, is a plaque. This was laid here in 1996 on the occasion of the official adoption of the enclave boundaries. Since then, the enclave borders have also been official "state borders".

Vaak wordt gedacht dat Baarle precies op de grens van Nederland en België ligt, waarbij de grens door één straat loopt. Dit is echter onjuist. In Baarle is er namelijk sprake van een enclavesituatie. Een enclave is een stuk grondgebied dat geheel omringd is door grondgebied van een andere staat. Wat Baarle zo uniek maakt is dat er niet sprake is van één enclave; het zijn er dertig in totaal! De grens loopt in Baarle dus kris kras door wegen, huizen en tuinen. Het Belgische Baarle-Hertog bestaat uit 22 enclaves. Deze 22 stukken grond zijn geheel omgeven door Nederlands grondgebied. Het Nederlandse Baarle-Nassau heeft op haar beurt 8 enclaves, waarvan er 7 als sub-enclaves in de twee grootste Belgische enclaves liggen en één nabij het kerkdorp Zondereigen.

It is often thought that Baarle is exactly on the border of the Netherlands and Belgium, where the border runs through one street. However, this is incorrect. This is because there is an enclave situation in Baarle. An enclave is a piece of territory that is completely surrounded by the territory of another state. What makes Baarle so unique is that there is no single enclave; there are thirty in total!  The border in Baarle is therefore criss-crossed by roads, houses and gardens. The Belgian Baarle-Hertog consists of 22 enclaves. These 22 plots of land are completely surrounded by Dutch territory. The Dutch Baarle-Nassau in turn has 8 enclaves, 7 of which are located in the two largest Belgian enclaves as sub-enclaves and one near the church village of Zondereigen.

Een behoorlijk versnipperd landschap dus. De grenzen ervan zijn pas sinds 1995 officiële rijksgrenzen, nadat de kadasters van Nederland en België zo’n 15 jaar lang opmetingen deden. Het resultaat van deze geografische puzzel was voor sommigen behoorlijk verrassend!  En zorgde her en der in het dorp voor verwarring. Zo werd er bijvoorbeeld een voordeur een klein stukje verplaatst omdat na de metingen bleek dat de bewoonster niet in België maar in Nederland bleek te wonen En omdat de voordeur bepaald in welk land je woont zou deze mevrouw dus Nederlandse worden en dat wilde ze niet. Door de voordeur en het venster ernaast te wisselen kon ze in België blijven wonen.

A pretty fragmented landscape. Its borders have only been official national borders since 1995, after the land registries of the Netherlands and Belgium took measurements for about 15 years. The result of this geographical puzzle was quite surprising for some!   And looked after here and there in the village confusion. For example, a front door was moved a little bit because after the measurements it appeared that the resident appeared not to live in Belgium but in the Netherlands. And because the front door determined which country you live in, this lady would therefore become Dutch and she did not want that. By changing the front door and the window next to it, she could continue to live in Belgium.

Opdracht 2:

Maak een foto van jezelf, je teamgenoten of mascotte (als je die hebt) bij de plaquette met de grens er doorheen èn met op de achtergrond de grenspaal . Zie ook het voorbeeld hieronder. Een foto met je gezicht erop is optioneel dus dat hoeft niet persé. Je rug bijvoorbeeld is ook goed. Plaats deze foto in je log.

Assignment 2:

Take a picture of yourself, your teammates or mascot (if you have one) at the plaque with the border through it and with the border post in the background. See also the example below. A photo with your face on it is optional so that is not necessarily necessary. Your back for example is also good. Place this photo in your log.
