Ena bolj znamenitih krščanskih umetnin zadnjega časa, ki jo pogosto vodiči kažejo turistom so vrata ljubljanske stolnice. In sicer je tu dvoje vrat:

Glavna »slovenska« vrata

Vrata ljubljanske stolnice so eden večjih dosežkov sodobne krščanske umetnosti v Sloveniji.

Gates of the Ljubjana cathedral are one of the biggest achievements of modern catholic art in Slovenia.

Main »Slovene« gate

Bronze Slovene gate was made in 1996 when John Paul II. visited Slovenia and blessed the gate. They were cast in bronze by Roman Kamšek, designed by Franci Petrič and made by sculptor Tone Demšar.

The reliefs represent 1250 years of Christianity among Slovenes. There are pre-Christian archaeological remains from which the tree of Christianity grows at the bottom. There is missionary  Modest who is active near the princely stone at Gospa sveta and the baptism of the princes Gorazd and Hotimir. Prince Pavlin II and the saint Cyril and Methodius are also depicted. It also presents the recording of the Freising monuments, which are the oldest texts in the Slovenian language. The Knights of the Cross are in charge of protecting the territory. At the gate is also presented peasant revolt and defense against the Turks. The church in Hrastovlje reigns in the middle of the door. Protestant books are raised in hands and above them (and just above the opening section) are three bishops, namely Friderik Baraga, Anton Martin Slomšek and Tomaž Hren, who were very important in the history of Slovenes. On the left there are the crowds of Slovenes going to World War I and World War II, and on the right are Slovenes during the Independent Slovenia who greet Pope John Paul II looking out of the window.

Side »Ljubljana« gate

The Ljubljana gate on the south façade was created at the same time as the Slovenian one: in the time of visit of Pope John Paul II. In 1996. The draft was prepared by Franci Petrič, their author is Mirsad Begić, and in bronze was cast by Borut Kamšek. They are called Ljubljana door because they portray bishops of the 20th century.

The bottom shows Emona, a Roman settlement that stood on the site of present-day Ljubljana. Above it lies the dead Christ, which has an amphora mug at his feet. The water in the jug symbolizes the living water that feeds around the surrounding skulls, which forms the fertile foundation of the modern Church. 6 most important bishops of Ljubljana diocese from 20. century bow to Christ. With the bishop/shepherd’s crosiers, they touch the body of the Christ and soil, which is soaked in living water. Above them on the right is the holy Mary of Brezje who is less visible. Brezje is probably the most important pilgrim destination in Slovenia.

The descriptions of gates were written after reading following sorces:

Lavrič Ana: Ljubljanska stolnica: umetnostni vodnik, Družina, 2007, pages 41-44

and webpage of the cathedral.
