Vilniaus universitetas įkurtas 1579 metais ir yra seniausias universitetas Baltijos šalyse bei viena seniausių aukštųjų mokyklų Vidurio ir Rytų Europoje. Jis taip pat ir didžiausias Lietuvoje. Per visą savo veikimo laikotarpį universitetas darė didelę įtaką ne tik Lietuvos, bet ir kaimyninių šalių kultūriniam, politiniam ir ekonominiam gyvenimui. Kadangi universiteto ansamblis statėsi ir vystėsi nuo 16 iki 19 amžių, tai čia persipynė įvairūs architektūros stiliai ir tradicijos, sukurdami unikalų ir viliojantį darinį. Anksčiau šis kiemas buvo uždaras kaip daugelis kitų, tačiau XIX a. pradžioje perstatant generalgubernatoriaus rūmus (dabar Prezidentūra) jie netilpo, generalgubernatorius nesutiko taisyti rūmų projekto ir vieną universiteto Bibliotekos kiemo korpusą teko nugriauti. Iš Bibliotekos kiemo yra įėjimas į kitus universiteto kiemus, esant galimybei aplankykite ir juos. Įdomių įspūdžių, o gal ir iki susitikimo!

Vilnius University is the oldest university in the Baltic states and one of the oldest in Northern Europe. It is the largest university in Lithuania. The old university campus was built and expanded in the period between the 16th and 19th centuries, therefore it exhibits a combination of many architectural styles. Before the beginning of the 19th century, it was a closed courtyard like most others, but the university buildings separating from Universiteto street were demolished as the reconstructed Palace of Governors (now Presidential Palace) did not fit.
