Die Ruine Bischofstein ist die Ruine einer mittelalterlichen Kammburg im Ergolztal im Schweizer Kanton Basel-Landschaft.
Lage
Nördlich von Sissach (auf der Gemeindegrenze zwischen Sissach und Böckten) liegt die Ruine Bischofstein in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft (100 Meter nördlich) zur Ruine Itkon bei 698 m ü. M. auf dem Kamm des Chienberges. Die Ruine ist von Sissach oder von der Sissacherfluh her auf Wander- und Fusswegen gut zu erreichen.
Burganlage
Die Burg Bischofstein wurde entlang eines lotrechten Felsabsturzes errichtet, der einen natürlichen Schutz der Festung im Nordwesten bildet. Die anderen Seiten wurden durch ein tiefes Grabensystem vom umgebenden Gelände abgetrennt.
Es können zwei Bauphasen unterschieden werden:
Die Originalburg
Der Bering folgt dem unregelmässigen Verlauf des Felskopfes. Während er über dem Felsabsturz nur recht schwach ausgeführt ist, erreicht er über dem Graben eine Dicke von über eineinhalb Metern. Der ursprüngliche Zugang erfolgte von Nordosten her aus dem Graben über eine Rampe (an der Innenseite der Ringmauer sind noch Reste der Toranlage zu erkennen). Das Tor war (wie meist in dieser Region) in Form einer kräftigen Tür ausgeführt. Dominiert wurde und wird die Anlage von einem runden Bergfried mit einer Mauerstärke von 2 Meter 30 und einer lichten Weite von nur rund 3 Metern.
Bergfried und Gebäude der Originalburg
Die ursprüngliche Höhe und Abdeckung ist unsicher, Horand nimmt an, dass er bis 20 Meter hoch gewesen und ein Kegeldach getragen haben könnte. Die zwischen der Ringmauer und dem Bergfried liegenden Gebäude waren als Steinbauten ausgeführt und deren Funktion konnte teilweise bestimmt werden. So lag ein Palas mit zwei Räumen südwestlich des Bergfrieds - mit je einem ebenerdigen Zugang aus dem Burghof. Der nördliche Raum des Palas war sogar unterkellert. Die oberen Fenster des Palas waren - ein Zeichen von Wohlstand - mit spitzbogigen Reihenfenstern aus rotem Sandstein errichtet worden: Diese im Schutt der Ruine gefundenen Fenstergewände wurden in den restaurierten Mauerteilen als Anschauungsobjekte eingefügt (nicht am ursprünglichen Platz). Gemäss Annahmen von Horand wurden die Steingebäude im südlichen Teil der Burg als Stall (unten) und Wohngebäude (oben) benutzt. Im nördlichen Teil des Burghofes wurde die Filterzisterne eingebaut, die wohl vom Dachwasser der umliegenden Gebäude (Stein- und Holzbauten) gespeist wurde.
Bering, inneres Tor und dahinter neueren Zwinger
Erweiterung: Eine geschützte Filterzisterne und eine neue, äussere Toranlage mit Zwinger wurden im Westen und Süden der Anlage angebaut. Bei dieser Ausbauphase wurde im ursprünglichen, südlichen Bering ein inneres Tor ausgebrochen (Durchgang vom Zwinger in den Burghof) und das alte Tor zugemauert.
Die Herren von Eptingen konnten sich offenbar eines für damalige Verhältnisse recht komfortablen Lebensstils erfreuen: Die vielen vorgefundenen, guterhaltenen Ofenkacheln (glasierte und unglasierte Ausführungen) deuten auf mehrere Öfen hin, die Fenster waren teilweise verglast (Scheiben mit Bleiruten gefasst). Auch die vielen Eisenteile, eine fast komplette Messingpfanne und sogar ein Malschloss aus Bronze deuten auf beträchtlichen Wohlstand hin.
Bei der Errichtung der Festung wurde nicht nur das frische Material aus den Halsgräben verwendet, sondern es ist anzunehmen, dass auch die unmittelbar danebenliegende Ruine Itkon – die damals schon am Zerfallen war -- als Baumateriallieferant ausgebeutet wurde.

Zum Cache
Als die letzten Nachkommen der Familie von Itkon starben gingen die gesamten Besitztümer an die Herren von Eptingen. Diese errichteten dort die Burg Bischofstein ohne allerdings zu wissen, dass der Geist des Herrn von Itkon noch immer keine Ruhe gefunden hatte. An mehreren Orten hatte der Geist bereits versucht sich zu betten. So versuchte er es einst in Wallbach am schönen Rhein, doch wurde er zu sehr von den Schwimmern und den tollkühnen Springern gestört, so dass er sich entschloss weiter zu ziehen. Auch auf der Farnsburg dachte er, dass dies ein perfektes Plätzchen für seinen Ruhestand sei. Aber auch hier wurde er durch die auffahrenden Riesentürme und das emsige Treiben der Zimmermannen erneut aufgeschreckt, so dass er sich entschied sein ewiges Glück an einer etwas entfernteren Stätte zu versuchen. Was wäre da nicht besser geeignet als sein altes Heim, wo er schon so viele Jahre als Mensch gelebt hatte. Also machte er sich auf zur Burg Bischofstein und erkundete jeden noch so kleinen Winkel, um sicher zu gehen, dass der Platz optimal ist, um seine Ruhe zu finden. Nachdem er den wunderbaren Ausblick aus dem oberen Fenster des Burgfrieds genossen hatte, stieg er in die tiefen Katakomben des Bergfrieds, um auch das Verlies zu inspizieren. Dabei rechnete er aber nicht mit dem fortschrittlichen Bau, die die Herren von Eptingen beim Burgbau an den Tag legten. Denn als der Geist das Verlies inspizierte fiel das massive Eisentor ins Schloss und schloss den Geist im Verlies ein. Alle Mühen das Schloss aufzuknacken waren vergeblich. Beim Bau wurde für die damalige Zeit das modernste aller modernsten Schlösser verwendet, das erstens unsichtbar war und zweitens sich nur über eine elektronische Bestätigung öffnen liess.
Bei den Ausgrabungen wurde ein geheimnisvolles Dokument gefunden. Niemand konnte es bislang entschlüsseln, aber vielleicht gelingt es dir ja das Rätsel zu lösen und den Geist des Herrn von Itkon zu befreien....
Es liegt nun an dir! Kannst du dem Geist helfen, aus dem Burgverliess zu entkommen und endlich seine ewige Ruhe zu finden?
Um den Geist des Herrn von Itkon von seinen Leiden befreien zu können benötigst du folgendes Equipment:
- Seil oder Schnur ca. 3m mit Magnet (Magnet ist nicht zwingend nötig)
- Das gehemnisvolle Dokument aus dem Listing (ausgedruckt oder online)
Um dem Geist helfen zu können solltest du noch einmal alles genau so durchgehen wie es der Geist tat bevor er im Verlies eingesperrt wurde:
Als der Geist auf der Burg ankam betrat er die lange Brücke über den Burggraben und ging zuerst in den Zwinger. Dort studierte er den Burgplan ganz genau und prägte ihn sich gut ein. Er dachte sich, diese Informationen könnten wohl noch äusserst nützlich sein. Neben dem Burgplan hing auch eine von E.+P. Holinger in Reliefschrift geschriebene Geschichte der Burg. Mit den Fingern fuhr er über die Buchstaben und fühlte ganz klar eine dunkle Energie. Diese war im nicht geheuer und so zog er weiter in Richtung Bergfried.
Um sich wirklich entscheiden zu können ob ein gefundener Raum auch wirklich passt um Ruhe zu finden, musste der Geist Mass von den Räumen nehmen. Dazu fertigte er sich einen rudimentären Massstab, in dem er bei der Treppe, die hoch auf den Bergfried führt, den Abstand von der untersten Treppenstufe bis zum Anfang des Sicherungskäfigs mit einer Schnur mass. An beiden Positionen knotete er jeweils einen Knoten in die Schnur. Fertig war das Massband.
Mit dem Massband in der Tasche schaute sich der Geist als nächstes den Wohnbau an. Dort mass er die Spitzfensterbreite mit dem angefertigten Massstab. Es sollte doch genügend Licht ins Zimmer fallen. Aber wie viele Fenster breit war noch einmal der angefertigte Massstab (von Knoten zu Knoten)?
Als nächstes versuchte der Geist sein Glück im Bergfried. Er schwebte die Stufen empor. «5,6,7….» zählte er im Geiste, als er von einer kleinen grauen Maus gestört wurde, so dass er aus dem Zählen der Stufen kam. «Kruzifix!! Wieviele Stufen hatte die Treppe auf den Bergfried nochmals?», fragte sich der Geist im Geiste.
Als letztes fehlte noch der Gang in den Keller zum Verlies. Auch wenn der Geist sich nicht vorstellte seine gesamte Ruhezeit dort unten zu verbringen, wollte er das Verlies dennoch begutachten. Es könnte sich ja auch bestens als Weinkeller eignen. Also stieg der Geist die steile Treppe, die im Inneren des Bergfriedes hinunter in den Keller führte hinab. Die Treppe schien ihm etwas wackelig und so kontrollierte er, welcher Schlosser (Name) wann (Jahr) diese Treppe gebaut hatte. Just in diesem Moment fiel die eiserne Tür des Verlieses ins Schloss und sperrte den Geist des Herrn Itkon ein.
Nun solltest du alle Angaben zusammen haben, um das elektronische Wächterschloss des Verlieses öffnen zu können. Wenn du alles richtig gemacht hast, den elektronischen Code eingegeben und übermittelt hast (bitte Geocachernamen angeben), sollte das Schloss des Verlieses aufgesprungen und der Geist des Herrn Itkon wieder frei sein. Der Geist wird es dir elektronisch bestätigen, sobald er in Freiheit ist!
Logbedingungen
- Löse das Rätsel, öffne das Schloss des Verlieses und befreie den Geist des Herrn Itkon
- Bestätigung vom Geist des Herrn Itkon, dass dieser nun endlich seine Ruhe gefunden hat
- Lade im Online-Log ein Erinnerunngsfoto von dir, deinem Geocacher-Namen oder deinem GPS (Ihr müsst darauf nicht erkennbar sein) bei der Ruine Bischofstein zusammen mit dem befreiten Geist des Herrn Itkon hoch (Seid kreativ!).

Bishofstein Castle is a castle in the municipality of Sissach in the canton of Basel-Landschaft in Switzerland. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
Location
The ruins of castle Bischofstein are located to the north of Sissach (on the municipal boundary between Sissach and Böckten) in the immediate vicinity (100 meters north) of the ruins of castle Itkon at 698 m above sea level on the ridge of the Chienberg. The ruin can be easily reached from Sissach or the Sissacherfluh on hiking- and footpaths.
Castle complex
Castle Bischofstein was built along a vertical rock fall, which forms a natural protection for the fortress in the northwest. The other sides were separated from the surrounding area by a deep trench system.
Two construction phases can be distinguished:
The original castle
The curtain wall follows the irregular course of the rock head. While it is built only very weakly above the rockfall, it is over one and a half meters thick above the trench. The original access was from the northeast from the ditch over a ramp (remains of the gate system can still be seen on the inside of the curtain wall). The gate was a strong door (as it was usually the case in this region). The complex was and is dominated by a round tower with a wall thickness of 2 meters 30 cm and a width of only around 3 meters.
Fortified tower and buildings of the original castle
The original height and coverage of the fortified tower is uncertain, Horand assumes that it was up to 20 meters high and could have carried a conical roof. The buildings between the curtain wall and the tower were made of stone and their function could only be partially determined. A hall with two rooms was located to the southwest of the tower - each room with a ground level access from the castle courtyard. The northern room of the hall even had a cellar. The upper windows of the hall - a sign of prosperity - were built with ogival windows made of red sandstone: These window frames, found in the rubble of the ruins, were inserted into the restored parts of the wall as objects of display (not in the original place). According to Horand's assumptions, the stone buildings in the southern part of the castle were used as stables (below) and residential buildings (above). In the northern part of the castle courtyard, the filter cistern was installed, which was probably fed from the roof water of the surrounding buildings (stone and wooden structures).
Curtain wall, inner gate and new outer ward behind
Extension: A protected filter cistern and a new, outer gate with a kennel were added to the west and south of the complex. During this expansion phase, an inner gate was knocked out in the original, southern curtain wall (passage from the outer ward to the castle courtyard) and the old gate was bricked up.
The lords of of Eptingen were obviously able to enjoy a lifestyle that was quite comfortable for the time: the many well-preserved stove tiles which were found (glazed and unglazed versions) indicate several ovens and the windows were partially glazed (panes with lead rods). The many iron parts, an almost complete brass pan and even a bronze painting lock point to considerable wealth.
When the fortress was built, not only the fresh material from the neck trenches was used, but it can also be assumed that the ruin of Itkon located immediately next to it - which was already falling apart at that time - was also used as a building material supply.
About the Cache
When the last descendants of the von Itkon family died, the entire property went to the Lords of Eptingen. They built Castle Bischofstein there without knowing that the spirit of Lord von Itkon had still not found rest. The ghost had tried to bed in several places. So he tried it once in Wallbach on the beautiful Rhine, but he was too disturbed by the swimmers and the daring jumpers, so he decided to move on. Next he tried it at the Farnsburg. He thought that this was a perfect place for his retirement. But here, too, he was startled again by the huge towers and the hustle and bustle of the carpenters, so that he decided to try his eternal happiness in a somewhat more distant place. What could not be more suitable than his old home, where he had lived as a human for so many years. Thus, he went to Castle Bischofstein and explored every little corner to make sure that the place is optimal to find peace. After enjoying the wonderful view from the upper window of the fortified tower he climbed into the deep catacombs of the fortified tower to also inspect the dungeon. But unfortunately, he did not consider the sophisticated construction that the Lords of Eptingen displayed when building the castle. So, it happened that when the ghost inspected the dungeon, the massive iron gate fell shut and locked the ghost in the dungeon. All efforts to pick the lock were in vain. During the construction, the most modern of all modern locks was used, which was firstly invisible and secondly could only be opened by an electronic confirmation.
A mysterious document was found during the excavations. Nobody has been able to decipher it so far, but maybe you will succeed in solving the riddle and freeing the spirit of Lord von Itkon....Now it's up to you! Can you help the spirit to escape from the castle dungeon and finally find its eternal rest?
To be able to free the spirit of the Lord of Itkon from its suffering you need the following equipment:
- Rope or cord (length of about 3m) with a magnet attached (it works also without the magnet)
- The mysterious document from the listing (printed or online)
In order to be able to help the spirit, you need to go through everything exactly the same way as the spirit did before it was locked in the dungeon:
When the ghost arrived at the castle, he stepped onto the long bridge over the trench. First he went into the outer ward. (Zwinger) There, he studied the castle plan very carefully and memorized it well. He figured this information might be extremely useful. Next to the castle plan there was also a sign with the history of the castle written by E. + P. Holinger. He moved his fingers over the letters and clearly felt a dark energy. He was not very comfortable with it and so he moved on towards the fortified tower.
In order to be able to decide whether a room really fits to find peace, the spirit had to take measurements of the rooms. Thus, he made a rudimentary tape measure. Using a string he measured the distance from the lowest step on the stairs that lead up the fortified tower up to the beginning of the safety cage. He tied a knot in the string at both the upper and lower positions. The do-it-yourself tape measure was done.
The ghost looked at the residential building (Wohnbau) with the tape measure in his pocket. He wanted to make sure that there is enough light in the room. He measured the width of the ogival windows with the self-made ruler. But how many windows wide was the self-made ruler (from knot to knot)?
Next, the ghost tried its luck in the fortified tower (Bergfried). He floated up the steps. «5,6,7….» he was counting in his mind when he was disturbed by a little gray mouse and therefore lost his counting status. «How many steps do the stairs have leading to the top of the fortified tower?" The spirit thought.
Lastly, the passage to the cellar and the dungeon had to be checked as well. Even if the spirit didn't envision spending all of its time down there, it still wanted to examine the dungeon, since it could serve very well as a perfect wine cellar. So, the ghost descended the steep stairs that led down inside the fortified tower into the cellar. The stairs seemed a bit shaky to him and so he checked which locksmith had built these stairs (name) and when (year). In that moment, the massive iron gate fell shut and locked the ghost in the dungeon
Now, you should have all the information you need to open the electronic guard lock of the dungeon. If you've done everything right, entered and transmitted the electronic code (please use your Geocacher name), the lock of the dungeon should be open and the spirit of Lord von Itkon should be free again. The spirit will send you a message as soon as he is free again.

- Solve the puzzle, open the lock of the dungeon and free the spirit of Lord von Itkon
- Confirmation from the spirit of lord von Itkon that he has finally found its rest
- With your online log, upload a souvenir photo of you, your Geocacher name or your GPS (you don't have to be recognizable on it) at the ruins of castle Bischofstein together with the liberated spirit of lord von Itkon (be creative!)
