Geocache Description:

As you can easily see from my hidings and findings, I'm an Italian guy in love with Asia. I had a great time living in some of the most beautiful locations in the world. And one that captured my heart is, no doubt, Taiwan. Located off the coast of southwest of Okinawa (Japan) and north of the Philippines, the island has been governed by the Republic of China (ROC) since 1945. The island nation has more than 23 million people and is one of the most densely populated places in the world. Besides its crowded cities, Taiwan is also known for steep mountains and lush forests. Taiwan has some very impressive scenic sites and its capital city, Taipei, is a vibrant culture and entertainment hub. Taiwanese cuisine is highly regarded with the Japanese in particular taking short trips to enjoy its relatively cheaper hospitality.

How to claim the cache: To claim this cache you will need to take and upload three pictures, at least one for any of these following three stages / locations, each one with a little Chinese artifact you collected, or some object with Chinese characters, or, at least yourself or some personal item, that will remind you about this visit / trip in Taipei. enlightenedMore details at the end of each stage description.

How to Reach the Cache

Take a taxi or the MRT to the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall station exit 5), which overlooks a central square flanked by the National Concert Hall and the National Theatre. If you arrive early enough, you will see elderly people practicing taichi amid the picturesque stone paths and koi ponds. The Memorial Hall opens at 9am; expect to spend at least an hour there to enjoy the place, climb the stone steps to see the bronze statue of Chiang Kai-shek. A changing of the guard ceremony occurs every hour (but if you plan to visit the Martyrs Shrine in the afternoon, feel free to skip the show for later). Descend the elevators to the ground level to view the exhibits on Chiang's life, complete with his sedans and uniforms.

Stage 01

Stage 01 - The Door

Liberty Square (also Freedom Square) is a public plaza covering over 240,000 square meters in the Zhongzheng District of Taipei, Taiwan. It has served as the city's public gathering place of choice since its completion in the late 1970s. The name of the square recalls the important historical role it played in Taiwan's transition from one-party rule to modern democracy in the 1990s.

You're passing through the majestic door of Liberty Square. The inscriptions over the archways, including the main gate that declares the plaza as "Liberty Square" (Traditional Chinese 自由廣場, Simplified Chinese 自由广场), recall the calligraphic style of Wang Xizhi in the East Jin Dynasty (see Chinese calligraphy). The style is noted for its sense of vitality, movement and freedom. The characters are placed in left-to-right sequence, following modern practice in Taiwan, rather than the right-to-left order of ancient Chinese tradition, which had been adopted at the site previously.

Take at least one picture in front of the Arc of Liberty Square.yes

Stage 02

You're now on the middle stage, the very center of the plaza, where you can take an astonishing 360° picture.

Liberty Square serves as a major site for public gatherings in Taipei and is home to three major landmarks as well as civic parks. At the east end of Liberty Square stands the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. The square is flanked by the National Concert Hall on the north and the National Theater on the south. A park surrounds the plaza and a wall surrounds the site. The square sits within sight of the Presidential Office Building.

Architecture at the site incorporates many traditional elements and recalls earlier Kuomintang monuments erected in China. Yang's design symbolically assigned civic virtues to each area of the square. The main gate, the Gate of Integrity (大中至正), was placed at the west end on Zhongshan South Road, with the Gate of Loyalty (大忠門) standing at the north side on Xinyi Road and the Gate of Piety (大孝門) at the south side on Aiguo East Road. A Boulevard of Homage, bordered by manicured bushes, connects the square to the memorial hall The plaza's importance in the development of Taiwan's democracy led to its rededication as Liberty Square by President Chen Shui-bian in 2007. Though the announcement of the new name was initially greeted with hostility by officials in the Pan-Blue camp, the name was eventually affirmed by officials across the political spectrum.

Take at least one picture at the center of Liberty Square. Here is the right spot to take a 360° picture, but you can select the subject you like the most.yes

Stage 03

The National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (Chinese: 國立中正紀念堂) is a famous national monument, landmark and tourist attraction erected in memory of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, former President of the Republic of China. After President Chiang Kai-shek died on 5 April 1975, the Executive branch of the government established a Funeral Committee to build a memorial. The design, by architect Yang Cho-cheng, was chosen in a competition. Yang's design incorporated many elements of traditional Chinese architecture to mirror that of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing in mainland China. (The Kuomintang (KMT) revered Dr. Sun as founder of the party and the government Chiang had led.) Groundbreaking for the memorial took place on 31 October 1976, the 90th anniversary of Chiang's birth. The hall officially opened on 5 April 1980, the fifth anniversary of the leader's death.

You need to climb the stairs and take a picture of the Liberty Square from the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall main gate.yes
