Um dos lugares mais incríveis para se visitar dentro da quinta da Regaleira é o Poço Iniciático. Denomina-se poço iniciático, pois acredita-se que era usado em rituais de iniciação à maçonaria e a explicação do simbolismo dos mesmos nove patamares diz-se que poderá ser encontrada na obra Conceito Rosa Cruz do Cosmos.
O Poço Iniciático é uma “torre invertida” com cerca de 27 metros no interior da terra, tendo acesso através de uma monumental escadaria em espiral sustentada por colunas esculpidas, por onde se desce até ao fundo do poço.
Configura-se como um espaço de sagração, de conotações herméticas e alquímicas onde se intensifica a relação entre a Terra e o Céu.
A escadaria é constituída por nove patamares separados por lances de 15 degraus cada um, com referências à Divina Comédia, obra de Dante, podendo assim representar os nove círculos do Inferno, do Paraíso ou do Purgatório.
No fundo do poço é representada uma rosa-dos-ventos (estrela de oito pontas: 4 maiores ou cardeais, 4 menores ou colaterais) sobre uma cruz templária, que é o emblema heráldico de Carvalho Monteiro e, simultaneamente, indicativo da Ordem Rosa-Cruz. A simbologia do local está relacionada com a crença que a terra é o útero materno de onde provém a vida, mas também a sepultura para onde esta voltará.
Muitos ritos de iniciação aludem a aspectos do nascimento e morte ligados à terra, ou renascimento. Os 23 nichos localizados debaixo dos degraus do poço iniciático representam um dos muitos mistérios da construção. O professor Gabriel Fernández Calvo da Escola Técnica Superior de Engenheiros de Carimbos quando visitava o poço acompanhado de outros professores verificou que os 23 nichos não estão colocados ao acaso, pois encontram-se agrupados em três conjuntos de 17, 1 e 5 nichos separados entre si à medida que se desce ao fundo do poço.
Provavelmente esta organização não é aleatória e refere-se ao ano de 1715 em que Francisco Albertino Guimarães de Castro comprou a propriedade.
O poço está ligado a outros pontos da quinta como à Entrada dos Guardiães, o Lago da Cascata e o Poço Imperfeito.
O poço é apenas uma das atrações do palácio histórico Quinta da Regaleira, que conta ainda com bosque, capela, belos jardins e um monumental palácio em estilo romântico, erguido no século passado.

One of the most amazing places to visit within Quinta da Regaleira is the Initiatic Well.

The symbolism of the place is related to the belief that the earth is the maternal uterus from which life comes, but also the grave to which it will return. Many initiation rites allude to earth-related aspects of birth and death, or rebirth.
The 23 niches located under the steps of the initiatory well represent one of the many mysteries of the building.
