Geocache Description:

This is one of my most favourite places in Ontario. Perhaps it will become yours, too.

The Virtual Cache Experience

Ever since the first round of new Virtuals, I instantly knew where I would place one were I ever lucky to receive the opportunity. So, here is two years of dreaming, become reality! This Virtual Cache is placed at the end of a 22km (round trip) hike that leads you to the top of the Sleeping Giant. The hike is spectacular, and was voted first place in a "7 Wonders of Canada" poll of Canadians.

The beauty of this hike cannot fully be captured in photos nor explained in words. Every step of this hike leads you through some of the most breathtaking sights this province has to offer. You will likely see much wildlife along the way, including deer, chipmunks, migrating birds, and the occasional black bear.

The Hike & Preparations

This hike has been described as "a heart-pumping, zig-zig ascent. (...) Once on top of the Giant the trail takes hikers to scenic lookouts on both east and west sides of the peninsula with spectacular views of Lake Superior. This hike should only be started by those in good physical condition. Bring water, sturdy hiking boots, warm clothing and a first aid kit."

I would also suggest bringing food, a flashlight in case you find yourself hiking at dusk, and any medications you may need during the hike. The length of time it takes to do this hike varies - I myself did the round-trip hike in 11 hours, including multiple stops along the way and an hour to enjoy the final scenic views, but I'm quite slow and I know many people complete it in several fewer hours than that (The 2TF completed it in 7 hours, for example). The first part of the hike is quite flat, but the last several kilometres are extremely challenging as the elevation of the end of the hike is 550m over where the hike begins.

Planning Details

Please make sure you purchase a Day Pass from the Visitor's Centre to place in your vehicle while you are hiking. The Visitor's Centre can also help you plan your trip. The weather conditions on Lake Superior can change very quickly so make sure you are well-prepared before heading out on this strenuous hike. This trail starts at the Kabeyun Trailhead (see first Waypoint), which is also where you can park your car. You follow the Kabeyun Trail until you reach the start of the Talus Lake Trailhead (see second Waypoint). You follow the Talus Lake Trail which eventually turns into the Top of the Giant trail. Make sure you take this trail all the way to the posted coordinates in order to fully experience the magnificent views of this hike and to be able to claim the Virtual cache.

Permissions and Safety

Permission for this Virtual Cache placement has been granted by the Superintendent of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. Please ensure you remain on marked trails for the duration of your hike - not only to protect the fragile nature around you and ensure the longevity of this Virtual Cache, but also for your own safety.

Logging Requirements:

Take a photo of your water bottle, keys, or geocaching-related item at the posted coordinates, with the view of Lake Superior in the background. Logs that do not contain the required photo will be removed.  Updated September 15 2021:  A photo of your self with Lake Superior in the background will also be accepted, though the original logging requirements are preferred.
