Visiting Kotor you already know it is a lovely town located in the secluded part of the
Bay of Kotor. It also seems quite obvious, that because of its spectacular location
and ancient defense walls it has become one of the most popular tourism destinations
in Montenegro visited by numerous cruise ships, pilgrimages and individual wanderers.

Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor has been UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. It includes the old town of Kotor, the fortifications of Kotor (historically Cattaro la Veneziana) and the surrounding region of the inner bay.

Bay of Kotor (Бока Kоторска/Boka Kotorska) is a winding bay of the Adriatic Sea touching the coastal region of Montenegro. Historically it was also the southernmost part of Dalmatia and apart from Kotor it is surrounded by several other medieval towns:
Herceg Novi, Perast, Prčanj, Risan and Tivat. The bay contains nine islands and consists
of four parts: Bay of Herceg Novi in the west, Bay of Tivat in the south (indluding isles Sveti Marko, Zanovjetni Školjic, Ostrvo Cvijeća and Mala Gospa), Bay of Risan in the north
(including isles Gospa od Škrpjela and Sveti Đorđe) and Bay of Kotor in the southeast. Apart from the above mentioned, the other islands in the area of the bay are Prevlaka, Mamula and Ostrvo Vavedenje located in the bay inlet.

The Bay of Kotor is surrounded by several ranges of Dinaric Alps: Orjen mountains in the northwest, Ledenice in the northeast and Lovćen in the southeast. The peninsula between the Bay of Tivat and the Bay of Kotor is occupied by the mountain range
of Vrmac, that forms the bay's characteristic shoreline together with peninsulas: Luštica and Prevlaka. Due to steep slopes surrounding it, the Bay of Kotor is sometimes called
a Mediterranean fjord. It is wrong, however, as it was not shaped by a glacier,
but ria - a flooded river valley.
