Geocache Description:

NARODNA IN UNIVERZITETNA KNJIŽNICA

1. STOPNJA

Kljub temu danes tam še vedno ne stoji nič in verjetno še dolgo ne bo. Do takrat imamo torej eno in edino, dobro, staro Plečnikovo zgradbo.

NALOGE ZA VPIS

2. Obiščite drugo stopnjo, bodočo lokacijo nove knjižnične zgradbe, in mi prek centra za sporočila pošljite odgovor: koliko vrstic besedila je skupaj na dveh tablah desno od zapornic parkirišča? Koliko od teh vrstic vsebuje števke?

Vpisi brez odgovora in fotografije bodo izbrisani!

NATIONAL AND UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

STAGE 1:

The roots of the first central public library in Slovenia date back to a decree from Empress Maria Theresa in 1774, which made books from the former Jesuit College in Ljubljana avaliable for public use in the Ljubljana Lyceum. Since 1807, the Lyceum library was legally entitled to recieve legal deposit copies of all the published books in the province of Carniola. After the World War I, the library, renamed State Reference Library, became the main library for the whole of Slovenia. The library moved into today's monumental building by architect Jože Plečnik in the spring of 1941. In 1945, the university library formally became the National and University Library in Ljubljana. Today, it is the Slovenian national library, the university library of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenian Library Network Development Centre and the central research library in Slovenia.

Plečnik designed the entrance to the library as a metaphor of initiation into the world of learning: a visitor must first push the heavy door with a handle in the form of Pegasus, and then follow the dark staircase towards the light coming from the higher floors of the temple of learning. The staircase is therefore one of the fundamental symbols of the building. On the first floor in front of the main reading room stones of various colours on the floor imitate a carpet  and complement the magnificent Doric columns in the lobby.

STAGE 2:

On this spot you will only find big macadam parking and bunch of metal on wheels. This property is intended for the building of the new national and university library NUK II for the past few decades. In 1989 the first plan was selected, in 1994 the law on construction of the NUK II was passed, in 1998 the first deadline for construction expired. In 2009 the land was designated for the parking lot, the contract on the first plan was cancelled and a new call for architectural plans was released. In 2012, a new architectural plan was accepted, which is still prevailing today. In 2014 the third deadline for construction has expired. It is estimated, that more than 30 million euros funds have been spent so far. Regardless of that, there is still no building at the spot and probably won't be any for a long long time. Until then, we have our beloved, old Plečnik's building.

LOGGING TASKS:

1. Enter the library and take the main staircase to the first floor. Somewhere on the way choose a motif you like the most and take a picture of yourself with it (photo of your face is not necessary, a body part or a piece of paper with your geocaching nickname is enough). Attach the photo to your log. To clear misunderstandings: only the logs with photos taken ON the main, big, black staircase OR ON the upper floor the hall in front of the main reading room count as acceptable. Photos taken below the main entrance, or even behind the glass doors in front of the security office will be deleted. My intention is for you to visit the library.
2. Visit second stage, the future location of the new library building and message me the answer: how many lines of text are there on the two boards on the right side of the barrier gates? How many of those lines include digits?

Logs without photos or messaged answeres will be deleted!
