A Trofa é uma cidade portuguesa pertencente ao Distrito do Porto, Região Norte e sub-região da Área Metropolitana do Porto, com cerca de 21 612 habitantes no seu perímetro urbano (2011).
É sede de um município com 72,02 km² de área e 38 999 habitantes, subdividido em 5 freguesias. O município é limitado a norte pelo município de Vila Nova de Famalicão, a leste por Santo Tirso, a sul pela Maia e a oeste por Vila do Conde.
Trofa é um concelho recente, mas a sua história nasce bem antes da constituição da nacionalidade.
A diversidade morfológica do território permitiu que as populações se fossem estabelecendo ao longo da história.
Crê-se que uma das primeiras citações conhecidas está integrada num documento de escritura do mosteiro de Moreira (Maia) datado do ano de 979, este documento refere Alvarelhos (alvarelios), São Cristovão do Muro (sanctum cristoforum) e Cedões (Zadones - localizado em Santiago de Bougado).
São inúmeros os testemunhos de época pré-histórica, desde os machados da Abelheira até ás gravuras do Monte de S.Gens, passando pelo material lítico encontrado na antiga Estação de Caminho de Ferro e pelas mamoas de S.Pantaleão e Alvarelhos.
Em época romana o território do concelho da Trofa foi atravessado por uma estrada estruturante para a administração desse tempo e que legou dois testemunhos de excepção; o Castro de Alvarelhos e os Marcos Miliários (classificados como Monumentos Nacionais).
A bondade das suas terras continuou a atrair as populações (assim o atesta a notícia de achados datados de época visigótica), traduzida na existência de grandes casas agrícolas, muitas delas contribuindo para a preservação de pequenos núcleos de carácter marcadamente rural que mantêm a identidade cultural do concelho.
Em 1809, a população da Trofa conseguiu opor-se às forças francesas da Segunda invasão francesa de Portugal, comandadas pelo Marechal Soult, que se dirigiam para o Porto.
Com apenas dois canhões, uma companhia de forças regulares apoiada pelo povo da Trofa munido de ferramentas agrícolas afiadas, conseguiu impedir que os invasores franceses, comandados pelo Marechal Soult, atravessassem o rio Ave junto à Barca da Trofa, na passagem do rio Ave em finais de Março de 1809.
Perante a oposição encontrada os franceses tiveram que subir o rio Ave, para o atravessar noutro local, em Ponte de Lagoncinha.
A Trofa foi elevada a vila a 16 de Maio de 1984 e a cidade pela lei n.º 29/93 de 2 de Julho de 1993. Tornou-se município autónomo em 19 de Novembro de 1998, por desanexação do vizinho concelho de Santo Tirso (em simultâneo com o município de Odivelas, criado na mesma altura, por desanexação de Loures.
A cidade da Trofa situa-se entre o Porto e Braga. Um factor importante para o seu crescimento foi a implementação da estação de caminhos-de-ferro no início do século XX.
