Geocache Description:

JUST FOR YOUR INFORMATION: To complete this Virtual there is no need to go in or up the tower all answers can be obtained “outside” Read the details / hint. It’s not that hard.

Welcome to the Erie Bayfront!

This Virtual cache is dedicated to the very scenic area located here at Dobbins Landing and Bicentennial Tower.

Captain Daniel Dobbins (whom Dobbins Landing is named for) was an Erie pioneer and mariner who sailed the Great Lakes as a merchant ship master, naval officer and Captain of the Revenue Cutter Service. Dobbins was instrumental in the building of Admiral Perry's fleet in 1812-1813.

The Bicentennial Tower is an observation tower located in Erie, Pennsylvania and features panoramic views of Lake Erie, Presque Isle State Park, and downtown Erie. The tower was built to signify the city's bicentennial year 1996. It is 187 feet (57 m) tall and has 2 observation decks.

Nearby at the Maritime museum can be see the USS Brig Niagara which was constructed from 1812 to 1813 to protect the vulnerable American coastline on Lake Erie from the British and played a pivotal role in the battle for the lake. Along with most warships that served in the war, Niagara was sunk for preservation on Presque Isle in 1820. Raised in 1913, it was rebuilt for the centennial of the Battle of Lake Erie. After deteriorating, the restoration of Niagara was started again in the 1930s, but was hampered by the lack of funds caused by the Great Depression and remained uncompleted until 1963. A more extensive restoration was carried out in 1988 in which much of the original ship was largely destroyed.

To claim this Virtual cache you must gather the following information located at Bicentennial Tower

1. On the upper (yes the huge one)walkway (big hint not on the tower itself, or on the road level not sure why this is so confusing) are lights lining the whole walk. Count and report the number of lights located here.

2. At the base of the tower facing the water are 3 statues. Tell me what they are and on the middle one tell me the date located just below the flag at the top.

3. Optional: As proof you were here take a photo of you and your favorite view from this spot.

Enjoy your time here and visit the other spots in and around this area including the Maritime Museum, the USS Brig Niagra and the memorials located on Presque Isle which hold close ties to this place.
