Geocache Description:

Umhlanga Whale Bone Pier

Quote from : Daily News

"Media giant CNN has just announced what almost everyone else knew all along: that the uMhlanga pier is the most beautiful in the world."

The Umhlanga Rocks promenade has undergone a major revamp with the construction of a ‘21st century pier’.

The project has contributed to reducing the unsightly pools of stagnant water that sometimes formed on an otherwise pristine beach.

According to the Engineers assigned to the project, the pier is unlike any constructed in the region with long span sections on columns to permit continuous access along the beach.

The architectural styling has been a very important element of the design and is in keeping with improvements to the promenade. The pier has a ‘whale-bone’ theme that has received favorable public comments.

Seating for the public has been made available along the pier with the latest trends in lighting for illumination at night making for a stunning look during the night or the day.

The pier is in fact a continuation of the culvert and extends approximately 80 meters across the beach to a deep-water channel to ensure maximum dispersal of storm water into the sea.

Much of the storm water that was discharged on to the beach at Granny’s Pool has now been re-routed to the new system and while the Granny’s Pool outlet can never be completely eliminated, the quality of the beach in the area has greatly improved.

In order to qualify for this cache you need to:

2) Walk to the end of the pier and take a photo of you or personal item (like GPS) at the location showing the Umhlanga Lighthouse

3) Include the photo's in your online log and enjoy the walk and views
