Das ehemalige markgräfliche Schloss in Erlangen wurde in den Jahren 1700 bis 1704 im Barockstil erbaut. Zusammen mit dem Schlossgarten, der Orangerie und der Konkordienkirche bildet es das erste in sich geschlossene, barocke höfische Bauensemble Frankens.
Markgraf Christian Ernst schenkte das Schloss seiner dritten Ehefrau Elisabeth Sophie – weshalb das Schloss auch Elisabethenburg genannt wird.
Da die zu den zehn Hauptkaminen führenden Nebenschlote nur schwer gereinigt werden konnten, kam es bereits im 18. Jahrhundert zu mehreren Bränden. Dennoch wurde zu Neujahr 1814 die Stelle des Schornsteinfegers eingespart. Am 14. Januar 1814 brach auf einem mit Gerümpel gefüllten Dachboden ein Brand aus, der nicht mehr gelöscht werden konnte, weil das Wasser bei −25 °C in den Schläuchen gefror und die Spritzen auch mit angewärmtem Wasser die notwendige Höhe nicht erreichten. Das Schloss brannte vollständig aus, nur das Mobiliar konnte gerettet werden.
16 Figuren auf dem Dach des Schlosses, im Volksmund Sandsteingötter genannt, überstanden das Feuer übrigens unberührt und stehen noch heute an ihrem Platz.
In den Weltkriegen wurde es als Reservelazarett genutzt. Seit 1945 dient es ausschließlich der Universitätsverwaltung.

The former margravial Erlanger Schloss was built between 1700 and 1704 in baroque style. Together with the palace garden, the orangery and the Konkordienkirche, it forms the first self-contained Baroque courtly building ensemble in Franconia.

As it was very difficult to clean the side chimneys leading to the ten main fireplaces, several fires broke out as early as the 18th century. Nevertheless, the chimney sweep was saved at New Year's Day 1814. On 14 January 1814, a fire broke out on an attic filled with junk that could no longer be extinguished because the water in the hoses froze at -25 °C and the jets of water did not reach the required height even with warmed water. The palace burnt out completely, only the furniture could be saved.
16 figures on the roof of the palace, popularly known as sandstone gods, survived the fire untouched and still stand in their place today.
During the world wars it was used as a reserve hospital. Since 1945 it has been used exclusively for university administration.
