Já foi o sítio do Hospital (de Todos-os-Santos, até ao terramoto, que o destruiu). Já foi local do mercado central da Cidade. Hoje é um magnífico local para estar, e uma belo local para contemplar o Castelo.
Foi alvo de pelo menos três intervenções famosas: 1755 (mercado a céu aberto), 1885 (praça: mercado coberto), 1971 (praça: largo aberto, sem mercado). E a estátua, colocada em 1971, acabará por ser deslocada para realinhamento nesta última remodelação (2000) da Praça, para ser vista da Praça do Comercio.
«Todo o conjunto urbano da Praça da Figueira data da segunda metade do séc. XVIII, estando o seu nome ligado a um dos mais populares mercados a céu aberto que existiu em Lisboa. Local do antigo Hospital de Todos os Santos, destruído pelo terramoto de 1755, a praça passou por diversas fases: em 1835 foi arborizada, em 1849 rodeada de grades de ferro e em 1883,foi demolida.
A nova praça inaugurada em 1885 apresentava quatro cúpulas, três naves e uma área de 8.000 metros quadrados permanecendo assim durante 64 anos após os quais se procedeu à sua demolição definitiva. Hoje é um espaço rodeado de edifícios simples e equilibrados.
Na praça encontra-se a estátua equestre de D. João I (Mestre de Avis) inaugurada em 1971 da autoria de Leopoldo de Almeida e Jorge Segurado.»

It was the site of the Hospital de Todos-os-Santos, until The earthquake, which destroyed it. I was the central market of the City. Today is a magnificent place to be, and a beautiful spot to contemplate the Castle.
It was the under, at least, three famous interventions: 1755 (open market), 1885 (square: covered market), 1971 (square: wide open, no market). And the statue, placed in 1971, was moved to realignment in this last remodeling (2000) of the Square, to be seen from the river.
The entire urban complex of Figueira Square dates from the second half of the XVIII century. The name being linked to one of the most popular open air markets that existed in Lisbon. The site of the old Hospital of All Saints, destroyed by The earthquake of 1755, the square went through several phases: in 1835 it was forested, in 1849 surrounded by iron railings and in 1883, it was demolished.
The new square inaugurated in 1885 had four domes, three roofs and an area of 8,000 square meters, remaining for 64 years after which it was demolished definitively. Today is a space surrounded by simple and balanced buildings.
