Caestert Caves and Castle
- An impression of the area -
Caestert Castle was a castle located on the Caestert Plateau in the Belgian province of Liège. The castle was about 250 meters south of the border with the Netherlands and about 100 meters east of the border with the province of Limburg. She lay on top of the rocks at Klein-Ternaaien, looking high over the river Maas on the east side. On the west side the still existing Caestert farm, which is in bad condition today. The castle was behind the farm at the end of the Castertweg and at the Rue de Caster. Bellow the castle, and still visible, are the castle cellar and burial cellar. In the area you will also find three large caves. The Ternaaien North cave (Ternaaien-boven or De Aardappelenberg) is the smallest of the three caves and in between Ternaaien South (Ternaaien-beneden or Le Collinet) and the Caestert Cave. In 2009 another system has been discovered which is connected to Ternaaien North via a narrow corridor. This new system is called Ternaaien Center (Ternaaien-midden). Have a walk around this beautiful area and get an impression of the underground world. The map gives a nice overview of all the waypoints to visit.
