Geocache Description:


The Ouse Valley Viaduct carries the London to Brighton Railway which crosses the River Ouse in Sussex between Haywards Heath and Balcombe its Heritage status Grade 2 listed building it is a Pier construction of brick, its total length 450 m (1,480 ft) width 13 m (43 ft)with 37 arches ,is 96 feet (29 m) high , carrying 2 tracks.Constructed by the end of 1842 It is located to the north of Haywards Heath and to the south of Balcombe.

Known for its ornate design, the structure has been described as "probably the most elegant viaduct in Britain." The roughly 11 million bricks required for its construction were mostly shipped up the River Ouse from the Netherlands.

Q 1 what number arch are the plaques in , counting from the right as you approach ( virtual stage 1 )

Q 2 follow the waypoint and discover ( virtual stage 2 ) what number arch is at this point where there is a passage way through the fencing for farmers access ( repeat Virtual stage 2 ) for tractors etc.

Q 3 at the first stage stand back and look up at the North tower and there is some round plates with bolts coming through on the brickwork,how many of these plates are there on one side
