Kriváň je jeden z najvyšších vrchov Slovenska, meria 2 494,7 metrov. Symbolický vrch Slovanov a slobody Slovákov, významný motív poézie štúrovského pokolenia. Aj takto by sa dal opísať tento impozantný vrch v západnej časti Vysokých Tatier, vypínajúci sa na konci dlhého hrebeňa krivánskej rázsochy, ktorá vybieha z hlavného hrebeňa Vysokých Tatier. . Vedú naň dve výstupové trasy, jedna z Troch studničiek a druhá od Jamského plesa. Obe sa spájajú v sutinovom Krivánskom žľabe. Na vrchole víta turistov drevený dvojramenný kríž a, samozrejme, impozantný kruhový výhľad.
Kriváň je prinajmenšom od čias Ľudovíta Štúra národným vrchom Slovákov. Skupina národovcov, medzi ktorými nechýbal samotný Štúr, vyjadrila svoj vrúcny vzťah k tomuto štítu výstupom na vrchol počas pamätnej národnej vychádzky, ktorá sa konala 16. augusta 1841. V roku martinského memoranda, teda v roku 1861, sa odštartovala tradícia národných výstupov na Kriváň, ktoré majú pevné miesto v letnom pláne tatranských turistických podujatí. Od roku 1993 bol Kriváň vyobrazený na 20halierovej minci od autora Drahomira Zobeka.Od roku 2009 sa Kriváň nachádza na eurominciach nominálnej hodnoty 1, 2 a 5 centov od toho istého autora .

With an elevation of 2,495 meters, Kriváň is one of the highest peaks in Slovakia and the most popular among the tourists. Readily accessible along maintained marked trails and with the exceptional vistas afforded from its summit, it is the hikers' favorite mountain in the western part of the High Tatras. A country-wide vote in 2005 selected it to be one of the images on Slovakia's 1,2,5 euro coins.

The three marked hiking routes to Kriváň start at different locations, but all ultimately converge at the elevation of about 2,145m , for the final ca. 350-meter steps, rocky ascent to the summit − the only segment where both hands may be needed to maintain balance in places.
1.The trailhead of the blue-marked trail is on the road between Štrbské Pleso and Pribylina, the color stays the same to the summit; elevation gain ca. 1,300m
2. The green-marked trailhead is on the same road closer to Pribylina at Tri Studničky, the green trail links with the blue trail below the summit; elevation gain ca. 1,360m
3.Hikers starting from Štrbské Pleso follow the red-marked trail towards Podbanské only to its intersection with the blue-marked trail at Jamské pleso from where they follow the blue trail to the summit; elevation gain ca. 1,150m
