Das technikgeschichtlich und bauhistorisch interessante Luzerner Nadelwehr ist als eines von wenigen in seinem Zustand erhalten geblieben. Während weltweit die Wehre in vielen grossen Flüssen durch halb- oder vollautomatische mechanische Wehreinrichtungen ersetzt wurden, wird der Wasserabfluss des Vierwaldstättersees mit dem Reusswehr nach wie vor in aufwendiger körperlicher Arbeit dem Wasserstand angepasst. Bei steigendem Wasserstand durch Gewitter oder Schneeschmelze muss die Wehröffnung von 4-5 Männern durch Herausziehen eines Teils der 3.5 Meter langen Holznadeln vergrössert werden.
Anfänglich wurde der See für die Luzerner Reussmühlen als feste Schwelle und Längswehr gestaut. Dies führte bei Hochwasser immer wieder zu Überschwemmungen in den Seeufergemeinden, bis 1608 die Tagsatzung wegen des Rückstaus zwischen den Urschweizer Kantonen vermitteln musste.
Im 18. Jahrhundert wurde das feste Wehr teilweise mit einsteckbaren Holzbohlen (Nadeln) ersetzt, um den Seepegel bei Hochwasser besser regulieren zu können. In Trockenzeiten floss wegen den Nadeln aber zu viel Wasser ab, was nach der Einführung des Dampfschiffverkehrs zu Problemen mit zu tiefem Wasserstand führte.
Zur besseren Seeregulierung wurde von 1859 bis 1861 das Reussbett um 80cm abgesenkt und die Nadelwehranlage, bestehend aus Seitenwehr, Längswehr und Stirn- oder Querwehr erstellt. Das quer zur Flussrichtung verlaufende Stirnnadelwehr wird nach seinem Erfinder auch Poirée-Wehr bezeichnet. Es weist maximal 175 Nadeln auf und ist in seiner Konstruktion, Funktion und Bedienung weitgehend unverändert.
Die Anlage wurde von 2009 bis 2011 renoviert und ausgebaut. Mit dem Ausbau der Reusswehranlage wurde der Seeabfluss bei hohem Wasserstand um einen Drittel, auf rund 430 Kubikmeter pro Sekunde, erhöht und damit der Engpass beim Seeabfluss gemindert.

The Lucerne needle weir, which is interesting from a technical and architectural point of view, is one of the few that has been preserved in its condition. While the weirs in many large rivers around the world have been replaced by semi-automatic or fully automatic mechanical weir systems. The water runoff of Lake Lucerne with the Reuss weir is still being adjusted to the water level through laborious physical work. When the water level rises due to heavy rain or snowmelt, the weir opening must be enlarged by 4-5 men by pulling out some of the 3.5 meter long wooden needles.
Initially, the lake was dammed with a permanent barrier and a small weir for the Lucerne Reuss mills. During floods, this repeatedly led to flooding in the lakeside communities, until in 1608 the confederate hearing had to mediate between the original Swiss cantons because of the backwater.
In the 18th century, the fixed weir was partially replaced with insertable wooden planks (needles) in order to be able to better regulate the lake level during floods. In the dry season, however, too much water flowed off because of the needles, which led to problems with the water level being too low for steamboat traffic.
To better regulate the lake, the Reuss bed was lowered by 80 cm from 1859 to 1861 and the needle weir system, consisting of a side weir, a longitudinal weir and a front or cross weir, was built. The front needle weir, which runs transversely to the Reuss, is after its inventor also called the Poirée weir. It consists of maximal 175 needles and is largely unchanged in its construction, function and operation.
The facility was renovated and expanded from 2009 to 2011. With the expansion of the Reuss weir system, the lake outflow was increased by a third, to around 430 cubic meters per second during high water level, thus reducing the bottleneck in the lake outflow.
