Geocache Description:

The huge man-made structure you see before you to the west of GZ is a dam wall constructed by South African civil engineers, contractors and skilled workers that took three years to build and was completed in 2016 at a cost of a little over R1billion. It is the fifth dam to be built in the Mooi-Mgeni system, which already comprised Midmar, Albert Falls, Nagle and Inanda Dams.

Known as the Spring Grove Dam it was built to create a reservoir of much needed water to augment the Mooi-Mngeni System which supplies water to the increasingly thirsty metropolis of eThekwini (Durban)

The construction components included:

• A roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam with an earth embankment;

• A concrete lined spillway

• Three gauging weirs;

• Re-alignment of private access roads that will be inundated by the dam; and

• An artificial fish barrier.

Water from the reservoir behind the dam wall is pumped uphill to Nottingham Road, about 12km away, and then it’s all down-hill into the Indezi River, near Balgowan, and eventually flows into Midmar Dam from whence it is pipelined to the consumers.

To qualify as a finder, answer the following and email to the CO:

• How high do you estimate the dam wall ?

• Is the overflow smooth or stepped ?

• Any idea of the capacity of the dam when full ? In millions of cubic metres.

• A photo (optional)
