Die Meyerschen Stollen in Aarau
Dieser Cache lässt sich super mit dem LAB-Adventure Die Stadt der schönen Giebel und ihre Schätze kombinieren.
In Aarau befindet sich ein besonderes Kulturgut, ein technik- und industriegeschichtlich einzigartiges Bauwerk: die Meyerschen Stollen.
Sie wurden bereits vor über 200 Jahren angelegt. Sagenumwobene Geschichten existieren über das Bauwerk und seinen Erbauer, Johann Rudolf Meyer Sohn. 1794-97 liess er ein stattliches Wohnhaus an der Laurenzenvorstadt errichten. Sein Architekt war der in Bern tätige Johann Daniel Osterrieth.
Parallel zum Hausbau liess J. R. Meyer Sohn ab 1791 auf seinem weitläufigen Grundstück ein Stollensystem anlegen, um in einer ersten Betriebsphase genügend sauberes Sicker- und Quellwasser für seine Textilfärberei, die sich im Keller seines Wohnhauses befand, zur Verfügung zu haben und in einer zweiten Phase – nachdem das eigentliche Fabrikgebäude um 1810 fertiggestellt war – zusätzlich mit Hilfe eines unterirdischen Wasserrades Energie zum Antrieb seiner «Maschinen» zu gewinnen. Geologischer Fachmann bei diesem Projekt war Samuel von Gruner, der beste Freund von J. R. Meyer Sohn und ab 1795 Direktor des Bergwerks in Küttigen.
Die Meyerschen Stollen in Aarau sind ein schweizweit einzigartiges unterirdisches Bauwerk. Einzigartig aus zweierlei Gründen: Einerseits aus ihrem Standort nahe bei einer Stadt, andererseits auch aufgrund ihrer Nutzung als unterirdische Sammelanlage von Grund- und Sickerwasser. Ging es vorerst um die Entwässerung eines sumpfigen Landstückes, wurde das gewonnene saubere Wasser später in der neuen Seidenfärberei von Johann Rudolf Meyer Sohn zum Färben gebraucht. Erst um circa 1810 wurde das gesammelte Wasser mit Hilfe eines unterirdischen Wasserrades auch zum Antrieb von Maschinen in einer neuen Fabrik gebraucht.
Die Meyerschen Stollen sind in ihrer Verwendung und Bauweise einzigartig. Bis heute sind ungefähr 2 km dieser Gänge bekannt. Das Wasserrad – mit einem Durchmesser von annähernd 10 m – war das grösste, welches damals schweizweit betrieben wurde. In den 1860er-Jahren wurde es durch eine Turbine ersetzt, um den Wirkungsgrad zu verbessern. Die Stollen sind ein Zeugnis der frühen Industrialisierung. Das Bauwerk spiegelt den damaligen Pioniergeist in Kombination mit einem fundierten Wissen über den Bergbau und die Geologie sowie eine unternehmerische Risikobereitschaft wider. Heute, mehr als 200 Jahre später, werden die Meyerschen Stollen durch ihre Lage mitten im urbanen Raum oftmals durch Bautätigkeiten zerstört. Nicht selten wurden und werden aufgrund des Wunsches nach mehr verfügbarer Fläche im städtischen Zentrum auch tiefe Kellergeschosse geplant. Aus diesem Grund brauchen die Meyerschen Stollen eine Organisation, die sich für diesen Zeitzeugen einsetzt.

- Mach eine Fotografie vor dem Wandbild im UG des Bahnhofes und halte Dein GPS Gerät oder einen anderen wenn möglich zum Thema Stollen passenden Gegenstand (Kopflampe, Helm, Warnweste, Pickel, einen passenden TB, ...) so ins Bild, dass sich das Bild deutlich von einer beliebigen Aufnahme an diesem Ort unterscheidet und hänge das Bild an deinen Log an.

The Meyersche Stollen in Aarau
This cache can be combined perfectly with the LAB adventure The city of beautiful gables and its treasures.
Aarau is home to a special cultural asset, a unique building in terms of technology and industrial history: the Meyer Stollen.
They were invested over 200 years ago. Legendary stories exist about the building and its builder, Johann Rudolf Meyer Sohn. In 1794-97 he had a stately house built on the Laurenzenvorstadt. His architect was Johann Daniel Osterrieth, who worked in Bern.
Parallel to house construction, J. R. Meyer Sohn had a tunnel system built on his extensive property from 1791, in order to have sufficient clean seepage and spring water available for his textile dyeing plant, which was located in the basement of his house, in a first phase of operation, and in a second phase - after the actual factory building was completed around 1810 - to additionally generate energy for driving his "machines" with the aid of an underground water wheel. The geological expert for this project was Samuel von Gruner, J. R. Meyer Sohn's best friend and director of the mine in Küttigen from 1795 onwards.
The Meyersche Stollen in Aarau is a unique underground structure in Switzerland. Unique for two reasons: On the one hand, they are located close to a city, on the other hand, they are used as an underground collection point for groundwater and seepage water. If it was initially a matter of draining a swampy piece of land, the clean water obtained was later used for dyeing in the new silk dyeing works of Johann Rudolf Meyer Sohn. It was not until around 1810 that the collected water was also used to drive machines in a new factory with the help of an underground water wheel.
The Meyersche Stollen are unique in their use and construction. About 2 km of these tunnels are known to date. The water wheel - with a diameter of approximately 10 m - was the largest that was operated throughout Switzerland at the time. In the 1860s it was replaced by a turbine to improve efficiency. The tunnels are a testimony to early industrialisation. The structure reflects the pioneering spirit of the time in combination with a sound knowledge of mining and geology as well as an entrepreneurial willingness to take risks. Today, more than 200 years later, the Meyersche Stollen are often destroyed by construction activities due to their location in the middle of urban space. Due to the desire for more available space in the city centre, deep basements were and are often planned. For this reason, the Meyersche Stollen need an organisation that supports this contemporary witness.

The log task
To prove that you were there, there are several options. Select (at least) one of the following tasks (
but one is enough):
- make a picture/selfie with helmet and if possible a matching tunnel worker clothes in the northern part of the tunnel and attach it to your log.

- Take a picture in front of the wall picture in the basement of the station and hold your GPS device or another object (headlamp, helmet, warning vest, ice pick, a suitable TB, ...) that fits the topic of the tunnel in such a way that the picture differs clearly from any other picture taken in this place and attach the picture to your log.
