Geocache Description:

Take a walk and discover a little about the history of The Entrance.

The posted coordinates will take you to the Pelican Plaza at The Entrance where you can observe the local pelican feeding at 3.30pm each day.

The Entrance was first discovered by Europeans when shipwrecked fishermen landed on the coast in 1796. They were fed by local Aborigines who guided them most of the way home. When they returned to Sydney they told of a white woman living with the indigenous people and this resulted in a search for an escaped convict named Mary Morgan. The search party became the first Europeans to discover Tuggerah Lake.

The area was first settled in the 1820s by Henry Holden. During the late 1800s and early 1900s the area contained many guest houses, the first of which was Dunleith Guest house opened in 1895 at The Entrance North, leading to The Entrance becoming a popular tourist destination, which it still is today.

To complete the virtual cache, you will need to find some information, send us the answers to a few questions and take a specific photo.

At WP1: The Entrance Boatshed

1. Where was the timber for the boatshed carted from?

2. When did Robert Duncan Brownlee die?

At WP2: Cabeethon Guesthouse

There was an information sign here about Cabeethon Guesthouse, one of the guesthouses in the area, sadly Cabeethon was destroyed by fire in 1967.  The sigh was removed (July 2022) for the seat surrounding the tree.

1. How many circles are on the horizontal base of the nearby sculpture? (Folded Calamari)

At WP3: The Original Bank Building

The original bank consisted of two rooms and was constructed of timber and fibro and was located on the corner of Coral street and The Entrance Road.

Originally the bank was open for business just one day per week, however after a short time it became necessary to open 3 days per week. Bank staff travelled from the Wyong branch by ferry to man The Entrance office.

1. What is the name if the business that now occupies the original bank building?

At the statue:

Take a photo of yourself and/or your GPSr at a pelican statue and add it to your log. (GPSr must be in the photo to claim a find).

The photo must be provided, either with the posted log or sent privately with the answers.
