Today is ” Dump the Pump Day ”!

Always celebrated on the third Thursday of June, ‘Dump the Pump Day’ is a reminder for us to seek out ways to eliminate our reliance on fossil fuels.
As petroleum fuels start to deplete the price of gas inevitably goes up with it, it’s a simple case of supply and demand. Dump The Pump Day was aimed at encouraging people to start reducing the amount of gas they spend by finding alternate ways to handle gas consumption. It all starts with just simply not using their car for a day, but it can expand even further beyond that. There are other options showing up on the horizon, with hybrid cars taking some of the gas cost out of driving, and electric cars eliminating it completely.
There are other options out there, everything from taking the public transportation to using vehicles that don’t require gasoline. Biking is unquestionably better for you, and many forms of public transport these days use propane or even electric. Dump The Pump Day encourages you to give yourself and the world a break from the pump and start changing the world.
Of course as geocachers we seem to be at odds sometimes with that whole notion of ‘driving less’. As we chase ever further for that next find, in that next county or state or country. We are usually only one FTF run or power trail away from another tankful of that ol’ go-go juice. But there are still many options to reduce the use. Such as seeking out a nice hike. Some of my greatest caching adventures have been on foot. Or maybe a bike trail like the Kal-Haven, Van Buren, and White Pine which are great examples, not to mention there are quite a few other trails only a couple hour drive away. Or even more adventurous could be a kayak run, even though some of the nearest ‘water trails’ are not really focused on enjoying the float (we all know which ones…). And even city caching presents its own unique geocaching experience, and a bike is a wonderful way to get around. Take the train to Chicago, and stretch the legs for an awesome variety of caches. You can’t use a car to do GC1A2T0 Vampire Empire or GC47A4 So many Storeys, So Little Time!

So even though I’ll tell everyone to get out caching today, I don’t mean to sound a bit hypocritical. Join a group and divide the cost, reduce the use, and gain a few smileys along the way as you know that you helped at least a little bit while still enjoying one of the silliest hobbys around. Let’s go cachin’!

Quote of the day – “ To those devoid of imagination a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part. “ - Aldo Leopold
