Geocache Description:


Australian David Warren was a research scientist at the Aeronautical Research Laboratory in the mid 50's. He invented the Black Box Flight Recorder whilst investigating the cause of the crash of the world's first jet-powered aircraft ,the Comet.

The flight recorder is now universally adopted around the world. Australia was the first country to mandate the recorder use ,after a Fokker Friendship crash in QLD in 1960.

David was made an Officer of the order in 2002 and bestowed the title of : Dr David Ronald Warren AO. Inventor of the Black Box Flight Recorder.

Awards and Honours • FAIE – Fellow of the Australian Institute of Energy. • The Australian Institute of Energy Medal (1999) • Hartnett Medal of the Royal Society of the Arts (2000). • Centenary Medal (2001) • Lawrence Hargrave Award of the Royal Aeronautical Society (2001) • Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) (2002) • ICAO Edward Warner Award (2016) Recognition In November 2008, Qantas named one of their Airbus A380s after Warren in honour of his services to aviation.

In June 2012, the ACT Government named a road in his honour, David Warren Road, in the suburb of Hume.

David Warren was inducted into the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame on 16 November 2013.

Warren died 19 July 2010, at age 85.He was buried in a casket bearing the label "Flight Recorder Inventor; Do Not Open"

On 25 March 2014, the Defence Science and Technology Organisation renamed their Canberra headquarters the "David Warren Building". This building is located at your starting co-ordinates ,as is his "special place "outside the building to start your multi.

A FTF torch awaits the first finder logged into the book. The cache is medium sized with a torch, several collectables and over a dozen swaps,plus log book and pencil .Extreme stealth will be needed at both locations .Parking is a bit tricky at both locations .You will get a very close up view of the famous Black Box Flight Recorder in action,on every aircraft taking off and landing at your final cache location. It all started with the brilliance of David Warren. Good Luck !
