A little history .....
The appearance of the Armorican sandstone is due to the lower Paleozoic. (from 550 to 430 Ma is the Cambrian-Ordovician).
The super continent operating a distension, the region has seen a rift and an oceanization at the foot of the chain. We can see the Rhéiques oceans north of the chain and the Massif Central ocean to the south (there are 500 Ma).
This phenomenon of marine transgression (a marine transgression is the sustainable invasion of coastal areas by the sea, due to a subsidence of the land surface or to a general rise of the sea level) added to a phenomenon of erosion of the chain cadomian will lead the formation of the Armorican Sandstone.
A little geology ....
The rock known as Armorican sandstone is a cemented coastal sea sand, generally very fine particle size, of whitish color, often very pure, frequently recrystallized (secondary recrystallization of the voids situated between the grains of sand), then passing to quartzite, forming one of the most resistant rocks of the Armorican Massif. This sandstone corresponds in Brittany to the first marine transgression that followed the erosion of the Cadomian mountain ranges (which culminated to culminate at about 4000 m before being strongly penetrated) and continued throughout the Ordovician period.
Deposits of shallow seas, Armorican sandstones still sometimes retain ripple-mark surfaces, as well as a great diversity of fossil traces or ichnofacies. They have a very variable thickness from a few tens to several hundred meters, and can even reach 800 m in the southern part of the Crozon peninsula. At their upper part, they admit dark red beds, very rich in rutile and zircon, which represent fossil coastal placers, deposited on the high beaches of the Ordovician sea.
Due to their hardness and toughness, these sandstones are difficult to shape. They have been and are still sought after as a bedding material, aggregates and riprap, and as a building stone, giving the buildings an exceptional durability and a whiteness that evokes that of certain limestones
On the spot, it's up to you to find your target.
Name: Armorican sandstone
Age: around 480 million years
Origin: Armorican massif
Notes: sedimentary rock composed of quartz grains intimately welded by a siliceous cement. This rock arms the summit of the mountains of Normandy
Question:
Log this cache "Found it" and send me your proposals for answers to the following 4 questions either via my profile or via the messaging geocaching.com (Message Center), and I will contact you in case of problems.
1. How old are the stones presented to you?
2. Explain with your words how this stone is formed
3. Describe me the stone before you? (Color, composition, fossil, ....)
4. And according to your observation, the stone is it friable or on the contrary very hard?
