Le Colonel Charles Bowler King, officier américain a été tué le 22 juin 1944 au village de la Rivière. Le Colonel King était Assistant Chief Of Staff G2 au VII US Corps, il repose au cimetière américain de Colleville-sur-Mer dans le Calvados.
Il fût tué par balle alors qu'il regardait les mouvements des troupes allemandes à la jumelle. L'endroit exact où il fut tué n'étant pas là où il y a la stelle, mais 500 mètres plus loin dans le champ longeant le havre (où a route tourne à angle droit).
Le front, après la coupure du Cotentin, s'est stabilisé pendant 15 jours. Les américaines ayant concentré leurs efforts sur la prise de Cherbourg, leurs objectifs sur la ligne Port-Bail Carentan étant de maintenir leur position jusqu'a la prise de Cherbourg. Ainsi, Port-Bail et les villages alentours ont beaucoup soufferts des combats qui y se sont déroulés. Par exemple plusieurs soldats US ont été tués, les allemands se sont regroupés dans les dunes en ayant creusé des tranchés au pied des haies de Tamaris et invisible du ciel. Ce fut un très lourd combat. Ensuite, le front s'est déplace jusqu'a la prise de La Haye du Puit, ce fut des combats acharnés, on parle d'un soldat US mort par mètre.
Le bourg de Port-Bail a également été bombardé, surtout par les alliés; des photos existent sur le bourg en ruine. D'ailleurs Port-Bail fut déclarée ville sinistrée et a obtenue la croix de bronze (aujourd'hui ajoutée à ses armoiries)

Colonel Charles Bowler King, an American officer, was killed on June 22, 1944 in the village of La Rivière. Colonel King was Assistant Chief of Staff G2 at the VII US Corps, he rests at the Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery in Calvados.
He was shot dead as he watched the movements of the German troops with the binoculars. The exact spot where he was killed was not where there is the stele, but 500 meters farther into the field along the harbor (where the road turns at right angles).
