Geocache Description:

Child’s Geocache of Verses

This multi-cache takes you straight into the territory in which Robert Louis Stevenson used to play pirates as a boy. Little wonder he later used his memories of it and the nearby island of Fidra to imagine Treasure Island.

The hunt starts at the Yellowcraigs Beach Car Park run by East Lothian Council.

Stage 1. Find the information board at N 56° 03.631’ W 2° 46.738

Find the 5 digit number. You need it to calculate your next stop and you need it later to work out how to open the cache.

The 5 digit number is ABCDE.

Stage 2. Go to N 56° 0(A+B).7(E-A)9’   W 2°E6.E9(A+B)

When you arrive take a good look around and marvel at the scene. See the natural arch with light shining through it on the island to your North. This is Fidra. Go to the very top and take the true compass bearing of the Lighthouse on Fidra. It is F° (round to the nearest degree).

The Fidra lighthouse was designed by the Stevenson family and was built in 1885.

Stage 3. Go to N 56° 0(E-B).[(F*2) + 67]’   W 2°E6.(F+115)’

Keep to the path that starts in the direction of the lonesome pine.

When you arrive, to your right you should see a fence made out of cleft fencing roll a little way to the East. Ahead of you is the large trunk of the old dying larch with twisted branches. This aged tree may well have been here when RLS was last here well over 100 years ago.

To your left look towards the top of Fidra lighthouse. It should appear between the two big branches of an old Scots Pine tree. If you are little you may need to jump up to see it!

Stage 4.

Go to the old Scots Pine and look on the ground behind it. Find where X marks the spot.

Move the stone cover gently and find the box. You need a code to open it. The code is BEAD.

Do help yourself to a verse. Each one is from A Child’s Garden of Verses. Please put everything back as you found it.
