Geocache Description:

This is a multi-virtual-cache that provides two interesting facts relating to the Battle of Gettysburg. Who was the first soldier killed at Gettysburg and where is he buried?

First Cache:

The initial coordinates: N 39 48.546 W 77 13.120 take you to a monument that marks a spot near where an individual was shot and killed. He has the dubious honor for being "The First Union Soldier Killed at Gettysburg".

First Cache Parking: For those heading south from Gettysburg, parking is available in a pull off area directly across the highway.

First Cache Questions: At the first cache site, face the monument with your back to the road. On the left (North West) side of the monument lists casualty and capture numbers for the Company that was mustered out February 20, 1864.
Answer the questions below by using the numbers on the left side of the monument to identify the coordinates for his gravesite (second cache). The following numbers will help you locate the gravestone (second cache site) by determining the coordinates.
  • Number of Killed Men = K
  • Add 5 to the Number of Captured Men = C
  • Subtract 9 from the number of men that Died of Disease = D
Make note of the following facts:
  1. What is the full name and rank of the individual honored by this monument?
  2. What date was he killed?

Second Virtual Cache Coordinates:

The second cache identifies the location of the gravesite of this individual. The coordinates are determined below and based on information obtained from the monument at the first cache site.

Where is he buried: N 39 44.D94    W 77 13.KCD

The original gravestone has been replaced with a new one bearing the individual's name and exact age at death.

Questions for taking credit for this Cache:
