¿Qué son los estuarios?

The estuary covers an area of 345 acres. Thousands of animals can be found here including birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. Many animals rely on estuaries for food, places to breed, and migration stopovers.
What are Estuaries?
Estuaries are partially enclosed coastal bodies of brackish water (mix of fresh and salt water) that meet with the ocean. They act as a transition zone between river and ocean environments. Fresh water brought to the estuary by rivers dilutes the estuary's salt content. Estuaries are subject marine influences, such as tides, waves, and the influx of saline water, as well as to riverine influences, such as the flow of fresh water and sediment. The combination of sea water and fresh water together provide high levels of nutrients in the water column and in sediment, making estuaries among the most productive natural habitats in the world.
Types of Estuaries
There are five different types of estuaries (some sources say 4, but we will go with 5): coastal plain, tectonic, bar-built, fjord, and delta system.
Coastal Plain – Coastal plain estuaries are created when sea levels rise and fill in an existing river valley. The Chesapeake Bay, on the East Coast of the United States, is a coastal plain estuary.
Tectonic – Tectonic activity, the shifting together and rifting apart of the Earth's crust, creates tectonic estuaries. California's San Francisco Bay is a tectonic estuary.
Bar-built – When a lagoon or bay is protected from the ocean by a sandbar or barrier island, it is called a bar-built estuary. The Outer Banks, a series of narrow barrier islands in North Carolina and Virginia, create sandy, bar-built estuaries.
Fjords – Fjord estuaries are a type of estuary created by glaciers. Fjord estuaries occur when glaciers carve out a deep, steep valley. Glaciers retreat and the ocean rushes into fill the narrow, deep depression. Puget Sound is a series of fjord estuaries in the U.S. state of Washington.
Delta system – Deltas form from sediment carried by a river as the flow leaves its mouth.
Environmental Factors That Affect Estuaries
As ecosystems, estuaries are under threat from human activities such as pollution and overfishing. They are also threatened by sewage, coastal settlement, and land clearance. Estuaries are affected by events far upstream, and concentrate materials such as pollutants and sediments. Land run-off and industrial, agricultural, and domestic waste enter rivers and are discharged into estuaries. Contaminants can be introduced which do not disintegrate rapidly in the marine environment, such as plastics, pesticides, furans, dioxins, phenols and heavy metals.
