ENGLISH VERSION
BARCELONA FLOWER (ENG)
Barcelona Flower
The origin of the drawing of the Barcelona Flower is attributed to the modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. He used it in 1900 on the tiles in the cobblestones that make up the pavement of the carriage entrance of Casa Amatller (Amatller House), located in front of where we are now. The floor of the lobby is covered by slabs designed by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. It is believed that it was inspired by the almond blossom because the surname of the bourgeois Amatller coincides phonetically with ametller (ametller is almond in catalan language).
The drawing, a flower with four petals, reminds us of the flower tile of Barcelona. However, according to the industrial designer, master's degree in Urban Design and author of the dissertation "The Barcelona model of public space and urban design", Danae Esparza, the slabs of Casa Amatller are not the origin of the classic tile of flower from Barcelona. If we look at it, we will see that there are big differences between this slab and the tile that has been used by exteriors. The Casa Amatller is made of natural stone and the pattern of the figure is made all in bas-relief; On the other hand, those from the outside are panels of hydraulic cement and the bas-relief is only on the outline of the flower.
The natural stone was extracted from the Montjuïc mountain. The Montjuïc Stone is a Upper Miocene quartzite sandstone exploded in several quarries in Montjuïc, from the Roman period to the middle of the 20th century. It is a compact and resistant stone with white, vinous and violet colors. The Montjuïc stone has been the most used natural stone in the construction in Barcelona and surroundings and from which the main buildings of Barcelona are made until the mid-eighties of the 20th century. It is a heterometric sandstone in which quartz grains predominate, subrodated or angular, with smaller amounts of feldspars, muscovite, rock fragments (micacites, quartzites, shales, etc.) and heavy minerals (zircon, tourmaline and magnetite). The cement is siliceous. It is a very hard rock, colored between gray and yellowish gray, often with bands and ferruginous spots of vinous color.
In 1906 five tile models were standardized: the flower, the four chocolate pills (the most widespread in the streets of Barcelona), the four tablets with four circles, that of concentric circles and the rhombus with four circles. Nowadays, although many other types of slabs such as granite or concrete are also used, these tiles of the beginning of the last century, only install the flower tiles and the four chocolate pills are are considered, respectively, the historic and most functional tile. In fact, the tile occupies about five million square meters of Barcelona's land.
The tile, slabs of 20 by 20 centimeters, was first used to solve the city's mud problems at the beginning of the 20th century. When the urbanization of the Eixample began, it was not done in a very homogeneous way. Each neighbor paved the 2,5 meters in front of his house with the material authorized by the City Council, for example asphalt, natural stone or cement. In 1906, the paving was so chaotic that there was a lot of mud and Barcelona was known as Can Fanga (fang is mud in catalan language). The use of cobblestones marked the end of these paving problems.
With the expansion of the Eixample, Barcelona City Council decided to start paving the city's streets. For this he took out a public contest in 1916 with the five models of tiles with geometric drawings. The contest was won by Escofet Tejera and Cia. This company had imported, at the end of the 19th century, the manufacturing technique of the hydraulic pavement. Manufactured with portland cement, sand and water, when produced with a hydraulic press the tiles could be made in series. Previously they were made of artisan form, which was economically unviable to be able to pave the entire city.
Gaudí tiles
On Passeig de Gràcia we find another type of tiles, those designed by Gaudí in 1904 and which were designed for the interior of the Casa Batlló. Its design is another example of Gaudí's genius: with a single piece you can make an infinite mosaic of marine elements.
In 1997 a redesign was made based on the mold that Escofet had kept. To improve the resistance, the relief was reversed as it is located on the outside and this leads to greater wear on the embossed tile. We can say that this pavement covers an area of 60,000 square meters.
The redesign has a green-gray hue and two-layer composition. It is a vibro-pressed floor that is 4,5 centimeters thick as opposed to the 20 centimeters thick that the original was, as it was an interior tile. It is placed on a mortar bed (mixture of cement with sand (fine aggregates) and water) of 3 to 5 centimeters thick, which at the same time settles on a concrete slab (mixture of cement (or other conglomerate) with gravel (thick aggregates), sand (fine aggregates) and water) between 10 and 15 centimeters, as planned for future occasional vehicle traffic loads. It has a weight of 6 kg.
The six-sided profiles remind us of the cells of a honeycomb or the drawing of turtle shells. The drawing faithful to the original shows the figures in bas-relief, the starfish, the sea snail and the algae, which evoke the sinuosity of the marine movement. Its hexagonal format gives rise to a homogeneous, continuous and unmanaged pavement, because the line that separates each piece is hidden. And where the texture of its relief is imposed by light. A design created by a great genius, Gaudí.
Tiles material composition
Portland cement is formed by calcium silicate and aluminates that have been damaged with water. Its mechanical resistance increases with the passage of time. It is obtained from a mixture of finely ground limestone rock and clays, which are subjected to the clinkerization process, consisting of baking at high temperatures, with partial fusion. Portland and its derivatives (cement with additions and white cement) are milled together with a small amount of plaster as a regulator of prey (if there were none, the cement would solidify rapidly on contact with water). Portland cement is usually gray, due to the presence in its composition of iron silicates from the clays and limestones used in its manufacture. The raw materials of Portland cement are calcareous (CaO), silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3), and iron oxide (Fe2O3). These components are appropriately combined to produce different types of portland cement. The selected raw materials are ground, and mixed in suitable proportions to achieve the desired composition.
Sand is an example of granular matter. The sand is created by a natural process dividing the rock finely, into particles or granules that include sizes of 0,063 to 2 millimeters. An individual particle in this size range is called sand grain. The next smallest size in geology is slime: which are particles below 0,063 mm in size. The next classification according to the size above the sand is gravel, with particles extending up to 32 mm.
Water is a transparent, odorless, tasteless chemical compound, chemically composed of hydrogen and oxygen, of chemical formula H2O.
Concrete is the building material resulting from the mixture of cement (or other conglomerate) with gravel (stone or thick aggregates), sand (fine aggregates) and water. The cement mixture with sand and water, called mortar, becomes a moldable paste with adherent properties, which in a few hours hardens and becomes a material of stony consistency.
Casa Amatller
As a result of the restoration work on
Casa Amatller (Amatller House) between 2008 and 2013 (where work was carried out on roofs, common areas and courtyards, the main floor was adapted as a museum house, a space on the second floor was enabled as in the documentary and study collection of the Fundació Amatller, among others), we were able to find out that in 2012 the main entrance where the natural stone panels are located was adapted.
Tile restoration work
The originals, as we said before, are from Montjuïc Stone. This type of stone is not homogeneous in terms of grain size or color. As for grain size, it varies between sandstone and microconglomerate. The color variation gives it the different distribution of iron oxides contained in the cement and the accumulation of certain feldspars. Being a stone that is no longer marketed or exploited existing sites currently depleted, another similar type of stone was sought.
This research was done worldwide, in order to choose a material that could be used in the intervention and restoration of the Historical Architectural Heritage where it was necessary to replace or incorporate stone elements with characteristics as similar as possible to the Montjuïc Stone.
The Scottish Stone was found and chosen, used since the beginning of this millennium in interventions in such unique buildings as the façade of the Cathedral of Barcelona, the Casa Amatller itself or even in the Temple of the Sagrada Família.
Many studies and essays were done before choosing it. Among them, one with six different samples of Scottish Stone comparing them with the Montjuïc Stone (composition, resistance, ...) and the one that looked more like it was chosen to replace the damaged pieces that could not be restore.
The 6 different samples of Scottish Stone
The original tiles are not individual, but a tile consists of the set of 8 flowers. To achieve maximum similarity, the stones restored with Scottish Stone were chopped by hand to make the flower just like the originals.
In a careful inspection of the pavement of the entrance of the Casa Amatller, it is possible to try to distinguish the original pieces from those of new contribution.
One of the new Scottish Stone tiles in the restoration process
Finally, mechanical plastering work was carried out to recover the pattern on the original stones which showed deterioration and blurring of the flower due to wear.
Leaving aside the tiles, taking advantage of the fact that we are in front of the Casa Amatller, we tell you that it is located in the Blockof Discord. It is a group of 5 buildings: Casa Lleó Morera by Domènech i Montaner, Casa Mulleras by Enric Sagnier, Casa Bonet by Marcel·lià Coquillat, Casa Amatller by Puig i Cadafalch and Casa Batlló by Antoni Gaudí. Although all are recognized architects of modernism, the popular appeal of Block of Discord referred to the professional rivalry between Montaner, Puig i Cadafalch and Antoni Gaudí. You will see that most of the facade is made of natural stone, specifically the famous Montjuïc Stone, but we want you to observe the different sculptures in the stone frames of the doors and windows. They are also made of natural stone.
Sant Jordi and the Dragon
Casa Batlló
Next to the Casa Amatller, we have the
Casa Batlló (Batlló House) which also has natural stone on the facade (apart from iron, ceramics, glass and wood). You can see that there are two types of stone that make up its facade. The Montjuïc Stone, visible in the main grandstand, on the ground floor and on the balcony slabs, and the second type of stone is the Carrara Marble, white in color, visible on the handrails and balustrades on the first floor.
Facade detail of Casa Batlló before the last restoration
This facade was restored in 2001 and in 2019, a new action was taken to verify that no new pathologies have appeared and to proceed with the tasks of cleaning, maintenance and conservation of the different elements that make it up, a fact that has been was able to discover, among others, that different adhesion mortars used on the facade and the original chromatisms and colors of different elements were used.
It has been verified that the coating that Gaudí added to the facade was perfectly adhered to the original facade and the detached areas have been repaired by filling the gaps with
lime mortar, using small holes in the joints or removing some crystals.
The general cleaning of the facade has also been carried out. Its goal has been to remove 100% of the dirt, basically dust and pollution accumulated over the years. As you can see, Casa Batlló is shining again.
