Geocache Description:

M2KB #6: Danger Beach

This is the 6th of a series of 10 caches on a wonderful coastal walk along the False Bay coast from Muizenberg to Kalk Bay (M2KB) - or vice-versa. The easiest way to do the whole series is to park at or near either station and get the train back from the other end (see train times here).

Otherwise the caches can be done in groups from and back to a convenient starting/parking place, or individually – several as park ‘n’ grabs.

The caches in the series are:

GC82N4H M2KB #1: Bailey's Cottage Short Multi
GC8349F M2KB #2: St James Walkway - Subway
GC8349J M2KB #3: St James Walkway - The Spring
GC8349J M2KB #4: St James Walkway - Ferocious Bush
GC8349K M2KB #5: St James Beach Short Multi
GC8349M M2KB #6: Danger Beach
GC8349Q M2KB #7: Metro and Mussels
GC8349V M2KB #8: Dalebrook Short Multi
GC8349W M2KB #9: The Old Tea Room?!
GC8349Z M2KB #10: Kalk Bay Short Multi

The cache, a small camo-taped tablet pot, is hidden at the southern end of a somewhat neglected garden area adjacent to the railway and this fine small beach beyond.

To reach the cache location:

a) if doing as a continuation of the series of caches along the coast: simply continue heading south from the GC8349K M2KB #5: St James Beach Short Multi along the beach as far as the Danger Beach access subway @ S 34 7.237 E 18 27.381. Pass through this and at the top of the steps head left (south-west) through the ‘garden’ to the cache location in the far left corner

b) if doing as a stand-alone cache:park at or near S 34 7.263 E 18 27.336 alongside the M4 Main Road and make your way down through the garden to the cache location.

Danger Beach is a lovely, quiet and under-rated beach located some 200m south-west down the False Bay coast from St.James train station. Don’t be put off by the name which refers to the rip tides and huge waves, rather than crime!

The small strip of sandy beach bordered by rocks at each end is accessed through a subway beneath the railway and although it doesn’t have many amenities, offers a relaxed atmosphere and great waves for body surfing.

Dangers Reef – the name of this surfing location - is an exposed reef break and a good place to learn to surf, because the waves aren’t too heavy, but come in at surfing height regularly enough to guarantee a good day’s exercise.

A small tidal pool located to the one side is good for bathing with small children.

See here for a blog page with some good photos of the beach and, here for a short surfer video there and here for a great drone video of the coast from St James beach to Dalebrook tidal pool including this beach.
