The world of agents and spies - famous characters
Although spies and agents act secretly and their identities are not disclosed, there are some we know. As fictional characters and movie heroes or even real agents who have come into the limelight by the press discovering their activity, their operations and actions in secrecy fascinate us.
Alfred Redl
The spy activity of the intelligence officer Alfred Redl went down in history as high treason to the k. u. k. (1. / German!) of Austria-Hungary. During the political tensions in Europe before the First World War, he revealed military secrets first to (2. / German!), later to France and Italy. He worked in the headquarters of the military intelligence service of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the (3. / German!), and thus had access to secret documents of the military.
Alfred Redl was born in (4.) in (5.), Galicia. He and his (6.) siblings were well educated and very successful in their jobs. At age 15, he started his military career in the (7. / 2 words – German!). He came to the intelligence service in 1899 and was finally in 1912 a member in the General Staff of the k. u. k. Army Corps in (8. / German!). Already in 1907, possibly even earlier, he started his espionage activity. On the one hand, it is said that he was blackmailed for his (9. / German!) by the Russian (10.), the intelligence services and the secret police in Tsarist Russia, but it is more likely that he has passed on top secret information for financial reasons because of his extravagant lifestyle.
The case was revealed by money sent to Redl under the code name (11. / 2 words). Since this shipment was not picked up, it was sent back. The investigation found (12.) crowns, suggesting that it was spying. To expose the spy, the letter was deposited in the post office again and the counter was monitored. When the letter was finally picked up, Redl was clearly identified as the recipient. On the following day, (13. / date – dd.mm.yyyy), a delegation visited the spy in his domicile at the (14. – 2 words). He realized that he had been identified as an agent and asked to put an end to his own life. He was handed a pistol, with which he shot himself.
The first film adaptation of this espionage case was in (15.) as a silent movie. In contrast, the movie "Oberst Redl" of 1985 with (16. – 3 words) in the lead role is not an authentic documentation of this spy.
