Where: The peak of Snowdon above.. the rest of Wales, all of England and almost all of Scotland. Note there will be a lot of ice and snow on the climb up, and neither the mountain railway or cafe will be open/running. Thus this won't be an event for everyone, even if the weather is being kind... Fun fact: The old building up here was designed by Clough Williams-Ellis, the architect behind Portmeirion. Not his prettiest work. It was replaced by a new visitors' centre in 2009, but this will be closed until next month! Free entry to the event location via public paths.
When: 12.30-1.00pm, Thursday February 21st 2019.
Who: Brave, hardy Cachers from far and wide! New to geocaching or caching events? You'll be made especially welcome but please only attend if you've winter mountain climbing experience. There's a caching group staying at Portmeirion this week, so this event might be suitable for some(?) of them.
Why: I climbed Snowdon with my dad and brother as a kid, and it has a special place in my affections. I attended an early UK cache event here in 2004 and hosted my own '3 Peaks Challenge' meet at the top, exhausted and sleep-deprived in 2009.
What: A simple, quick gathering of cachers to exchange travel items and caching wisdom. There's very limited shelter at GZ and you will get cold while not climbing so please dress for the weather (it's North Wales in February, even without the 1085m/3,560ft elevation!) and approach with EXTREME CARE. By attending you accept all personal risks as your own. The mountain is a dangerous place at the best of times and February is far from the best of times. There's a 2002 virtual cache close by to find on the way in or out if you wish: Where is Snowdon Summit??? by Gamma Boo. It's one I've visited several times since finding it in September 2004. The last being April 2011. 28% FPs and some nice photos showing currentish conditions.
How: The best routes to the top depend on wind direction and strength. If the weather is bad I'll add a note to the event on the day, so you may wish to refresh the page for that. The Miners, Pyg and longer Llanberis paths are the three popular ones but it's a large climb whichever route you take so bring walking poles and wear your warmest boots!
