Nesta altura, a jovem Ana Plácido, estava prometida a um comerciante abastado, o que à época se consideraria um "excelente partido".
Camilo não conseguira esquecer Ana. Assim, por volta de 1858, este D. Juan, começa a cavalgar junto da casa onde vivia Ana Plácido com o marido, que insatisfeita com o seu casamento não se coibia de o vir cumprimentar.

Conhecido o escândalo, a esposa adúltera é posta em reclusão no Convento da Conceição de Braga, mas ao fim de pouco mais de um mês foge, retomando a convivência com o seu grande amor.

Aguardaram presos, durante mais de um ano, o julgamento em que o júri não considerou provados os factos e, por isso, foi proferida sentença absolutória. O julgamento, aconteceu num clima de grande tensão, correspondente à grandiosidade do escândalo.
