Geocache Description:

This is my fourth, and final multi-cache based around Whitehaven harbour. Originally I planned only one, but it is such an interesting place. The starting coordinates should take you to a bench on Whitehaven harbourside. The back of the bench is in a distinctive ‘Whale Tail’ style. On the tail is an engraving with a date - 1092 in this case. You need to visit ten of these benches, and substitute a number for the letter in the list below. There are 16 benches in total, so 6 of them are surplus to the cache itself. 12 of the benches are in this ‘vertical tail’ style, the other 4 are what I have described as ‘flat tail’. All the flat tail benches are grouped together, but two are not on the immediate harbourside. From either of the two flat tails on the harbourside look inland, beyond the pagoda style canopy, and you should see the Old Custom House (now Age Concern). The other two flat tails are located outside. Waypoint 1 is located at the16th and final bench, so if that isn’t your sixteenth find something has gone wrong! I'm sure 'Messrs Google, Wiki and Partners' could have an input to some of this; but why deny yourself the delight of another stroll around the harbour? Once you have gleaned all the required numbers have a sit down on the 16th bench (hopefully it will be unoccupied but there is no guarantee) and using the following formulae work out the coordinates for the final. N54 3J. HB(G+K-B)’ W03 3D.(A-E)FC’ 1. 10A2 William 2nd Rufus the Red invades Cumbria and takes the area from Scotland. 2. 11B2 Creation of the Barony of Copeland by Henry 1st. 3. 1299 The Whitehaven ship Mariote under Captain Scott carries corn for Edward's army. 4. 132C The earliest coal mining activities are recorded at Arrowthwaite Whitehaven. 5. 141D Lowther family fought at the Battle of Agincourt. (flat tail) 9. 1729 Carlisle Spedding sinks Saltom Pit, England’s first undersea mine. 10. 177F Americans led by John Paul Jones raid Whitehaven. 11. 1782 Daniel Brocklebank sets up Whitehaven shipyard which becomes Cunard in the 19thC. 12. 184G The Earl of Lonsdale and George Stephenson bring railways to Whitehaven. 13. 1876 Queens Dock, first wet dock opened and named after Queen Victoria. 14. 19H0 Wellington Pit explodes taking the lives of 136 men and boys. 15. 194J Marchon works built at Kells. 16. 200K Renaissance of Whitehaven, a millennium project supported by National Lottery Fund.
