LA TORRE - la Torre dei Prendiparte è una delle circa venti torri gentilizie ancora presenti nel centro di Bologna. La Torre è stata eretta nel XII secolo, e come le sue sorelle vantava una doppia funzione, difensiva ed offensiva. Benché ora sia spoglia, può essere considerata un antenato del moderno condominio, poichè in origine vi erano ancorati numerosi ballatoi e strutture in legno. La Torre è stata eretta dalla famiglia Prendiparte, che all'epoca possedeva diversi edifici nelle vicinanze. Vanta un'altezza di 60 metri, con uno spessore dei muri alla base di 2,35 metri, che, con progressive riduzioni dette riseghe, diminuisce fino a 1,35 metri alla sommità, dimensione comunque considerevole e che suggerisce che in origine il progetto prevedessse che fosse più alta. Le caratterizzanti riseghe danno origine anche al nomignolo della torre, detta Coronata. La famiglia Prendiparte (tra le più importanti della Bologna medioevale) mantenne il controllo della torre fino al 1358, cambiando poi vari proprietari; fu adibita a prigione della curia fino alla confisca napoleonica del 1796. Al suo interno, sono visibili molti graffiti ad opera di prigionieri (tutti rei di reati contro la religione o la morale cristiana), in ottimo stato di conservazione. Dopo il 1796 la torre passò ancora di mano in mano fino a che, nel 1972, non giunse nelle mani dell'attuale proprietario, che la ristrutturò e le conferì l'aspetto odierno.

THE TOWER - Prendiparte's Tower is one of the remaining noble towers (ca. 20) in Bologna city centre. The tower was erected during XII century and, pretty much like all of the other ones around the city, had both an offensive and defensive purpose. It can be considered the ancestor of a modern condominium. Back then, several walkways and wooden structures were grabbed on to the tower. The Tower was built by Prendiparte Family, that owned several other buildings in the area. It is 60 metres high and its walls are 2.35 metres thick at the basement. Through several size reductions (still visible) called "riseghe", the wall thickness at the top reduces to 1.35 metres. This suggests that the tower was likely supposed to be higher. The characteristic size reductions "riseghe" give origin to the Tower's other name, "Coronata" (i.e. "Crowned"). Prendiparte Family (one of the most important in Bologna during the Middle Ages) controlled the Tower until 1358. The Tower changed ownership several times and became a curial prison until the Napoleonic requisition in 1796. On the internal walls, graffiti engraved by prisoners (imprisoned for crimes against Christian morale and religion) are still visible. After 1796 the Tower changed ownership again and again until in 1972 became the property of its current owner - who completely renovated it and gave it its current aspect.
