Number 1099 in a series of caches where a red telephone box is in close proximity to a post box.
The only rules are that they have to be able to be photographed together, be not more than 100’ apart and the phone boxes have to be red.
A Fine Pair # 1099 - Woodbury Salterton
This Telephone Box has been decommissioned but has a new lease of life as a rather well-stocked library. Feel free to bring and swap a book.
A 'fun' fact about Woodbury Salterton to entertain you whilst you're there.
The village's name comes from the fact that the original settlement was founded by a small group of saltworkers on the outskirts of the larger town of Woodbury. In the 1300's Saltworking was a thankless and difficult job, involving the draining and evaporation of salt marshes. In Woodbury Salterton the salt marsh was part of the Exe Estuary's tidal wash but the production of salt this way meant the settlement was at the mercy of the sun.
The Digger's Rest Inn just up the road was originally a cider house and is over 500 years old.
Now the village is home to 'a fine pair'. Things are looking up...
If anyone has a more interesting fact about this place please post in your log. I might even add it to the page!
