Sigurd Toresson fra Bjarkøy, født en gang rundt år 1005, var etter det vi vet den eneste sønnen til Tore Hund, den mektige høvdingen fra Hålogaland, og dennes hustru Ranveig. Det er lite som nevnes om Sigurd i historien, og antagelig levde han selv et lite dramatisk liv, og med en far som hadde vært med på å drepe helgenkongen Olav var det antagelig best å ikke dra til seg for mye oppmerksomhet. Når han døde er også ukjent.

Sigurd Toresson var født inn i den mektigste høvdingætten i Hålogaland, og høvdinger som Tore Hund på Bjarkøy, Tore Hjort i Vågan, Torolv Kveldulvsson på Sandnes, Hårek på Tjøtta, Herlaug og Hrollaug i Namdalen, Olve Grjotgardsson på Egge og Håkon Grjotgardsson hadde i tiden rundt 1000-tallet en økonomisk styrke og politisk makt som gjorde dem uavhengig av høvdingene på Vestlandet. Trøndelag og Nord-Norge (Hålogaland) utfylte hverandre ved at korn fra Inn-Trøndelag ble byttet i fangstprodukter fra kysten i nord. Dessuten seilte høvdingene sørover til nordsjølandene og brakte hjem smykker, våpen og finere varer. I tillegg bant høvdingene i Hålogaland strategiske allianser sørover gjennom giftemål.

Sigurds onkel bar samme navn, Sigurd Toresson fra Trondenes, og var en av de store håløyghøvdingene. Han var gift med Sigrid, søster til Erling Skjalgsson fra Jæren. Snorre Sturlason forteller at Sigurd var en meget rik og en høyt hedret mann.

Sigurds og Tores søster var Sigrid Toresdatter som ble gift med Olve Grjotgardsson fra Egge, og bodde derfor i Inn-Trondheimen. Hun ble senere gitt i ekteskap til Kalv Arnesson, som også var en av Tore Hunds forbundsfeller i kampen mot Olav Digre. Sigrid er en hovedperson Vera Henriksens roman Sølvhammeren.

Sagalitteraturen nevner en mann ved navn Sigurd fra Hålogland som på denne tiden seilte flere ganger til Island og andre steder. Selv om denne Sigurd ikke er uttrykkelig nevnt som Sigurd Toresson kan man anta det er snakk om samme mann.

Sigurd selv ble gift med en jevnaldrende kvinne fra Island, Aud Snorresdatter. Hun var datter av Snorre Gode, en mann med posisjon på Island, og som egentlig het Torgrim Torgrimsson, og nevnes i Eyrbyggja saga (Sagaen om Øyrbyggjene) og i Njåls saga. Sigurd traff Aud i Norge, men kanskje kjente han henne fra før. Aud var først gift med en Viga-Barde (Viga = Drap) fra Island som dro med Aud til Norge. Etter en heftig krangel dro Viga-Barde fra Aud og til Miklagard, gikk inn i væringkorpset (keiserens livgarde) og ble senere drept i et slag.

Sigurd Toresson from Bjarkøy was, as far as we know, the only son of Thorir Hund, the powerful chieftain from Hålogaland, and his wife Ranveig. Sigurd was born around 1005. It is not written much about Sigurd, and presumably he lived a less dramatic life than his father. But with a father that had played an important role in the killing of the holy king Olaf, it was probably best to not attract too much attention. It is not known when he died.

Sigurd Toresson was born in to the most powerful of the chieftain-families in Hålogaland. Chieftains like Thorir Hund in Bjarkøy, Thorir Hjort in Vågan, Torolv Kveldulvsson at Sandnes, Hårek at Tjøtta, Herlaug and Hrollaug in Namdalen, Olve Grjotgardsson at Egge and Håkon Grjotgardsson at Lade had in the time around year 1000 an economical strength and political power that made them independent of the chieftains at Vestlandet. Trøndelag and the north of Norway (Hålogaland) had benefits of each other by that grain from inner Trøndelag was traded in hunting and fishing products from the coast in the north. In addition to that the chieftains sailed south to the lands around the North Sea and brought home jewellery, weapons and finer goods. They also made strategic alliances in the south through marriages.

Sigurd’s uncle was also named Sigurd, that was Sigurd Toresson from Trondenes. He was one of the important Håløyg-chieftains. He was married to Sigrid, the sister of Erling Skjalgsson from Jæren in the southwest. Snorre Sturlason writes that Sigurd was a very rich and much liked man.

Sigurd and Thorir’s sister was Sigrid Toresdatter. She was married to Olve Grjotgardsson from Egge, and she therefore lived in the inner part of Trøndelag. She was later given to marry Kalv Arnesson, who was also one of Thorir Hund’s allies in the battle against Olaf Haraldsson (later Olaf the Holy). Sigrid is a main character in Vera Henriksen’s novel “The silver hammer”.

The sagas mention a man called Sigurd from Hålogaland who in that times sailed several times to Iceland and other places. Even if this Sigurd is not expressly named as Sigurd Toresson, one may assume that we talk about the same man.

Sigurd himself was married to a woman from Iceland, Aud Snorresdatter. She was the daughter of Snorre Gode, a man with position at Iceland. His real name was Torgrim Torgrimsson, and he was mentioned in the Eyrbyggja saga (the saga about the Øyrbyggjes) in the saga of Njål. Sigurd met Aud in Norway, but he may have known her from before. Aud was first married to a Viga-Barde (“Viga” means murder) from Iceland who went with Aud to Norway. After a big row Viga-Barde left Aud and went to Miklagard (now: Istanbul) to join the personal life guard of the emperor of Miklagard. He was later killed in a battle.

To get to Bjarkøy you need to take the ferry from Stornes to Bjørnerå. It is Norled that operates route 177 (schedule). We recommend that you plan your trip well, but if you want to support the local business, there is a Nærbutikk at both at Lundenes and Bjarkøy.
