First 50 Heroes – CLIFFORD ERNEST SCOTT Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Bazhornet: I have been out to this one a couple of times armed with a variety of containers, but there is simply nowhere nearby suitable that hasn't already been muggled and I flatly refuse to put a cache on a waste bin. Sadly, therefore, I have no choice but to archive it. Farewell Clifford Ernest Scott [:(].

Geocache Description:

First 50 heroes

The Coalville Heroes series celebrates the first fifty volunteers from the Coalville area to take part in the Great War of 1914-18. Most enrolled in August 1914 and left for training on October 30th 1914. They trained at High Tor in Charnwood and Loughborough, then traveled to Southampton to take the steamer to France. Of the 50 volunteer soldiers, 22 returned. Each geocache commemorating a true volunteer soldier.

A local charity, helped by hundreds of local people, created an exhibition – 'The Famous 50', which has to date (Nov 2018) had over 12,000 visitors.

Clifford Ernest Scott was born in Blaby in 1895 and was the son of Walter and Kate. His father was station master at Blaby and Coalville. Prior to signing up he was a telegram messenger & clerk for the LNWR and he was a member of the YMCA. He died in 1916 in Ypres, Belgium when a shell hit the dugout in trench 50. He was created for the exhibition by the Thomas Russel School in Barton.
