Geocache Description:

Cache is not at posted coordinates. BYOP.

When I was in college, I read a lot of books about the Vietnam War. Many of them were the stories of elite soldiers who went on Long Range Recon Patrols (LRRP). These six man teams would be inserted by helicopter or boat into the jungle and then patrol very quietly in search of the enemy. They would call in artillery strikes and bomb runs and report enemy movements for larger forces to attack. Despite the inherent danger of these patrols, these soldiers often survived because of their superior tactics and the professionalism of the soldiers.

One particular tactic for insertion was to have the helicopter carrying the team to fake insertions at several points along their route so the enemy wouldn't know exactly where the team was dropped off at. By lowering into a landing zone (LZ) and then rising back out and moving on to the next fake insertion point, the enemy could not be sure where the team was inserted.

A Long Range Geocaching Patrol (LRGP) has been inserted into the greater Taft area in order to practice their marksmanship at the Taft Shooter's Challenge 2018. Your mission is to find them. From GZ head northwest on Petroleum Club Road and follow the video to check and see which common Geocaching LZ they actually inserted into. Good luck.

The Taft Shooter's Challenge is a combined shooting and Geocaching race where the fastest time wins. Started in 2012, this event was a rousing success and continues to grow year after year. This cache was part of the Veteran Class for the 2018 event.
