Here you will find yourself at the remains one of the 148Mhz SATAN command antenna stations! I have added the location of the other command site to this listing. SATAN (satellite automatic tracking antenna network) was used to communicate with, and control satellites.
At Orroral, SATAN consisted of 4 antennas. The 2 back at the main site (near the carpark) were used for the downlink of data, and the two here, were used for the uplink!
This site here at the Orroral Valley was a NASA tracking station, which was part of the STADAN network. It was active from 1965 to 1985. It was one of 21 similar stations around the world.
This site was used originally to track satellites including the Tiros and Nimbus weather satellites. It also communicated with Scientific equipment left on the moon by Apollo astronauts. Finally, in the early 1980s it was used to track the Space Shuttles.
