Vom Kloster Dawit Garedscha aus führt ein steiniger und steiler Fußpfad hinauf zum Bergkamm, an dem entlang der schmale und teilweise abschüssige Weg weiterführt zum Höhlenkloster Udabno. Es gehört zu dem im 10. Jahrhundert entstandenen Klosterkomplex Dawit Garedscha und liegt nahe der Grenze zu Aserbaidschan. Zur Zeit der Sowjetunion war das gesamte Gelände Sperrgebiet und militärisches Übungsgelände. Viele der Höhlen wurden durch Schießübungen, aber auch durch Erdbeben zerstört. Udabno ist insbesondere für die im späten 10. und frühen 11. Jahrhundert entstandenen Fresken berühmt, die vor allem im Refektorium und in den Resten der Kirche erstaunlich gut erhalten sind, obwohl sie fast ungeschützt der Witterung ausgesetzt sind. Der Weg führt von hier aus weiter am Grat entlang zu einer kleinen Kapelle. Hier wird das Grenzgebiet von ein paar Soldaten bewacht, die aber an den wenigen Touristen, die sich hierher verirren, kein Interesse zeigen. Ein ebenfalls steiler Pfad führt von hier aus wieder hinab zum Kloster.
Der Aufstieg dauert etwa 45 Minuten, insgesamt solltet Ihr zwei bis drei Stunden für die Wanderung einplanen. Die Anstrengung lohnt sich in jedem Fall, Ihr werdet mit tollen Ausblicken sowohl in Richtung Georgien als auch Aserbeidschan belohnt und auch das alte Bergkloster mit seinen Fresken ist in jedem Fall einen Besuch wert.
Achtung: In den Höhlen bzw. der Gegend gibt es giftige Schlangen. Ihr solltet also in jedem Fall feste Schuhe an den Füßen haben und bei der Suche nach dem Cache gut acht geben.

From Dawit Garezha Monastery, a stony and steep footpath leads up to the ridge, along which the narrow and sometimes steep path leads to the Udabno Cave Monastery. It belongs to the 10th century Dawit Garescha Monastery complex and is located near the border with Azerbaijan. At the time of the Soviet Union, the entire area was restricted area and military training area. Many of the caves were destroyed by target practice, but also by earthquakes. Udabno is particularly famous for the frescoes of the late 10th and early 11th centuries, which are remarkably well preserved, especially in the refectory and in the remains of the church, although they are almost exposed to the weather. The path continues from here along the ridge to a small chapel. Here, the border area is guarded by a few soldiers, but they show no interest on the few tourists that pass by. A steep path leads down from here to the monastery.
The ascent takes about 45 minutes, in total you should plan two to three hours for the hike. The effort is well worth it, you will be rewarded with great views towards both Georgia and Azerbaijan and the old mountain monastery with its frescoes is definitely worth a visit.
Attention: In the caves or the area there are poisonous snakes. You should always have solid shoes on your feet and take good care while searching the cache.
