Childhood memories Traditional Geocache

It was really sad to know that in Castelnuovo's centre there were no caches. Since when I've discovered Geocaching, one of my wishes was to hide a cache in the centre of my hometown, as the few caches in the Castelnuovo's area are really far from the main square and they are all micros.

So, HERE I AM! I think I have found the perfect spot, I am very proud of this and I hope the cache will remain here for a long time. I have built an appropriate medium-size handmade wood box for the occasion! It has taken a few hours but I had fun, I have decided to fully immerse myself in this special mission and I do not regret it at all :)

The cache is located in a very special spot for me, as you can imagine from the name of it, I was used to walk up and down through this tunnel during my whole childhood because my grandmother lived just down the street.  
Once cars were allowed to cross this tunnel as well, while now it is open only to pedestrians since almost ten years. So, no worries, you can take your time to look for the cache without worrying about the traffic, I am sure you will appreciate this part:)

The story behind the cache: Why here?

I still remember the times when my grandmother used to ask me to go get her an ice cream. She used to give me few coins and send me to the ice cream shop just in the middle of the Umberto I square. "A scoop of cream and hazelnut, please", always! 
Even when I was around with my parents without my grandmother, I was the only child getting hazelnut flavour instead of chocolate or strawberry because it was her favourite flavour and for this reason, it was also mine! :D (I still really like it!).
In 2003, unfortunately, my Nana passed away and I stopped getting ice-creams there. Btw, in 2009, the old ice-cream man passed away and with him the best whipped cream I have ever tasted, now there is still an ice-cream shop (a new one!) but I did not give it a try yet... 

You will find everything around this spot: an ice-cream shop, a tobacco store, few bars, two ATM, several clothes shops... And do not forget that you are in The Umberto I square, the Castelnuovo's main square! Look high and you will see the amazing Rocca Ariostesca that takes her name from Ludovico Ariosto, an Italian poet charged to be governing the Garfagnana's area in 1522 (he was not very happy to stay here, and he came back to Ferrara just 3 years later in 1525, saying not very nice things about the Garfagnana's region! "Land of wolves and brigands " he said...)

I do not think you will find particular difficulties to find this cache, I hope you will enjoy the hunt and you will have the chance to leave something inside! 

Inside you will find the log book, a pen and A GIFT for the first fifty cachers! Please take only one! :) Ps. I would suggest to bring your own pen if you have the chance, just in case mine would stop working. Cheers!

Few other information on the main sights: 

• The Rocca Ariostesca (Ariosto's Castle), dating to the 12th century and enlarged by Castruccio Castracani in the following century. It takes its name from the Italian poet, who resided here in 1522–25 when he was governor of the Garfagnana for the House of Este. It is now home to an archaeological museum.
• the Duomo (Cathedral) of Sts. Peter and Paul, erected in the 16th century. The façade is in Renaissance style, while the interior is Baroque. It includes a terracotta attributed to Andrea del Verrocchio and a canvas by Domenico Ghirlandaio depicting the Madonna with Saints.
• the Capuchins' Convent
• Fortress of Monte Alfonso, built in the late 16th century by the Estensi as their last stronghold before the Republic of Lucca
• Parco dell'Orecchiella, a nature park and botanical garden
• Teatro Alfieri

Ero parecchio dispiaciuta nello scoprire che a Castelnuovo non c'erano cache. Da quanto ho scoperto Geocaching, uno dei miei desideri era quello di nascondere una cache nel centro del mio paese, dato che le poche cache presenti nell'area di Castelnuovo sono molto distanti dalla piazza principale e sono tutte di dimensioni micro.

Quindi, ECCOMI QUI! Penso di aver trovato un nascondiglio in un punto perfetto, sono davvero orgogliosa di questo e spero che la cache possa rimanere qui a lungo. Per l'occasione, ho personalmente costruito una scatola di legno di medie dimensioni! Tra chiodi e vernice è stato un lavoro che mi ha occupato diverse ore, ma ho deciso che questa missione speciale meritava una "full immersion" e mi sono divertita, non rimpiango il tempo impiegato :)

La cache è in un posto davvero speciale per me, come hai potuto immaginare dal suo nome. Durante la mia infanzia ero solita a camminare su e giù attraverso questo tunnel moltissime volte al giorno, dato che mia nonna viveva proprio nella strada sotto.
Una volta anche le auto potevano passare all'interno del tunnel, che adesso è aperto solamente ai pedoni dal 2012. Quindi, non preoccuparti, puoi cercare la cache con calma senza preoccuparti del traffico, sono sicura che apprezzerai questa parte :)

La storia dietro la cache: perchè proprio qui?

Ricordo ancora tutte le volte in cui mia nonna mi chiedeva di andarle a prendere il gelato. Mi dava qualche moneta e mi mandava dal gelataio "Baiocchi" in piazza Umberto I. "Una coppetta di creama e nocciola, per favore", sempre! 
Anche anche andavo in giro con i miei genitori, senza mia nonna, ero l'unica bambina che sceglieva il gelato alla nocciola invece dei classici cioccolato e fragola, questo perchè era il suo gusto preferito e per questa ragione era anche il mio! :D (Mi piace ancora molto!).
Nel 2003, sfortunatamente, mia nonna è venuta a mancare e io ho smesso di prendere il gelato lì. Inoltre, nel 2009, anche Oreste, il vecchio gelataio di quel tempo, è venuto a mancare, e con lui è sparita anche la miglior panna montata che io abbia mai assaggiato. Oggi, la gelateria esiste ancora, ma non ho ancora provato il gelato della nuova gestione... 

Troverai qualsiasi cosa intorno a questo punto: gelaterie, una tabaccheria, alcuni bar, due banche, diversi negozi di abbigliamento... E non dimenticare che sei in piazza Umberto I square, la principale piazza di Castelnuovo! Guarda in alto e vedrai la meravigliosa Rocca Ariostesca che prende il suo nome da Ludovico Ariosto, un poeta, commediografo, funzionario e diplomatico italiano, che era stato incaricato di governare la regione della Garfagnana nel 1522 (Tutti sanno che Ludovico non era felice di abitare qua e infatti tornò a Ferrara appena 3 anni dopo nel 1525, dicendo cose poco carine su quest'area! "Terra di lupi e di briganti " come la chiamò lui...)

Non credo che incontrerai particolari difficoltà nella ricerca di questa cache, spero che la caccia al tesoro ti diverta e che avrai la possibilità di lasciare un ricordo all'interno della scatola! 

Dentro troverete il log book, un penna e UN REGALO per i primi 50 cachers, prendetene soltanto uno per favore! :) PS. suggerirei di portare la vostra penna nel caso in cui quella smetta di funzionare. Buona caccia!
