This is one of a line of 21 surviving milestones along the former Norwich to Thetford turnpike, created in its entirety in 1766 and lasting until 1870. More details on this milestone can be found on the Norfolk Heritage Explorer. This Milestone also has 'London 98 Miles' and an OS Benchmark on it. If possible I will try and place caches near as many of these milestones as possible, although as I know a few are beside the main A11 I may have to get inventive to make the caches accessible!
Please be especially careful finding this one - you can park on the side of the road (ensuring you don't block driveways) as I did when placing, but the road is a 60 mph limit at this point and cars fly down here. Not recommended for Geo-kids or Geo-dogs. You can also park at the lay=by a little to the north and walk back if preferred, but the warning about cars remains.
Without giving too much away, please be aware that the bottom part of the cache is a black plastic spike that may well stay in the ground when you retrieve the cache. Please ensure you re-unite the halves when replacing to prevent the cache getting lost down the ditch behind the hiding spot!
Congratulations to Gimmealook for another FTF - just under half an hour from publishing!
A cache near a milestone. If you wish to set a milestone cache then please contact Marcusmaximi who is keeping track of the numbers. You may have to check on the 'magic' map to make sure that a particular milestone is not a scheduled ancient monument or somesuch.
