Geocache Description:

The beloved and historic Clamshell Railroad transported people, oysters, cranberries and more up and down the Long Beach Peninsula before there were paved roads! Known as the train that ran by the tide table, not by the time table, retrace the whistle stops and learn about the early days of transportation out here at the "end of the road".

Wallicut was another whistle stop for the Clamshell Railroad -- no depot, waiting area, or even a roof to stay dry underneath. Local families would flag down the train to be picked up, and it was likely used as a temporary stop to transport supplies and timber to and from the area. The tracks were diverted along this area to keep them on higher, dryer ground rather than close to the shoreline where winter storms would have washed out the tracks on a regular basis.
