A co to są te gwiazdy, konstelacje i inne?
Nocą widzimy na niebie mnóstwo gwiazd. Ale patrząc na nie, patrzymy jednocześnie na miliardy obcych planet. Taką konkluzję wysnuć można z nowych badań astronomów z Caltech — wynika z nich bowiem, że układy planetarne są we Wszechświecie normą. Wnioski te wysnute zostały głównie na podstawie dokładnych obserwacji układu Kepler-32 - bardzo reprezentatywnego systemu planetarnego w skali Galaktyki. W samej Drodze Mlecznej znajduje się prawdopodobnie około 100 miliardów planet. To daje w przeliczeniu średnio jeden glob na każdą jedną gwiazdę.
Na Drodze Mlecznej, w stosunkowo bliskiej odległości od planety Ziemi i Słońca, zaledwie 30 lat świetlnych, może znajdować się około 100 planet, na których istnieje lub możliwe jest życie. Naukowcy z European Southern Observatory obliczyli, że w naszej galaktyce mogą być miliardy — podobnie skalistych jak nasza — planet o cechach możliwych do zamieszkania. Nazwane zostały przez uczonych SuperZiemiami. Mają wielkość naszej Ziemi, albo są 10 razy większe od niej. Obracają się wokół czerwonych karłów (nieudanych gwiazd), o niewielkiej masie — zbyt małej, żeby mogły w nich zachodzić reakcje chemiczne przemiany wodoru w hel, które są głównym źródłem energii gwiazd.
Gwiazdozbiór (konstelacja z łac. constellatio, con od cum 'z [czym]' i stella 'gwiazda') – określony obszar na sferze niebieskiej ustalony przez Międzynarodową Unię Astronomiczną. Gwiazdy wchodzące w skład gwiazdozbiorów nie są ze sobą zazwyczaj fizycznie związane, a ich bliskie położenie na niebie jest wywołane geometrycznym efektem rzutowania ich położeń na sferę niebieską.
Tradycja łączenia gwiazd w symboliczne kształty, które nazywamy asteryzmami, sięga niepamiętnych czasów starożytnych. Najstarsze zachowane wzmianki pochodzą z ok. 4000 lat p.n.e.
Ostateczny podział sfery niebieskiej na 88 gwiazdozbiorów oraz ich granice zatwierdziła w roku 1930 Międzynarodowa Unia Astronomiczna.
