El Lugar
La serranía de Hornocal es una sierra ubicada a 25 kilómetros de la ciudad de Humahuaca, es un camino de ripio que deja a los turistas en un balcón al frente del majestuoso cerro cuya simetría y color atrapan al oportuno visitante.
Se trata de una formación sedimentaria estratificada conformada por la formación Yacoraite (una caliza de colores ocre, amarillo, verde, blanquecino donde el hierro no logró oxidarse), de fines del tiempo Cretácico cuando vivían los últimos dinosaurios, hace 75 millones de años. Esta caliza está delimitada por otras formaciones sedimentarias bien oxidadas, de color rojo intenso, que provocan el impresionante contraste.
Tiene una altura de 4761 metros sobre el nivel del mar por eso en su ascenso se recomienda hacerlo lento y si es posible hacer unas paradas previas para ir aclimatándose a la altura.
