WHY?
Because everyöne should know the difference
between a diæresis and an umlaut, and because
you might win something fancy in the raffle!
Yes, those two dots above the ‘e’ in Zoës are called a diæresis, not an umlaut. An umlaut is a diacritical mark which alters the sound of the underlying vowel and often changes the meaning of the word (as in German), whereas a diæresis, derived from the Greek word meaning ‘division’, is placed over a vowel to indicate that it is voiced in a separate syllable, as with naïve and coördinate (and Zoës). While umlauts are essential to the pronunciation and meaning of words, diæreses are not, and many modern style guides consider them obsolete (much like the archaic spelling of diaeresis with an ‘æ’ ligature). This informal meet-and-greet dinner event will be held at Zoës Kitchen on Tuësday, 24 July, at 7pm. All are welcome, even the punctuationally challenged. There will be a logbook to sign, trackables to discover, cngugnts to trade, and prizes to win in a free raffle. Abundant free parking is available, and the establishment is wheelchair-accessible and kid-friendly.
The fine print:
· Purchase of comestibles is not necessary to attend this event
· All attendees are responsible for purchasing their own food and beverages
· If you bring a trackable to the event, please be certain it is claimed before you depart
· You must pronounce ‘Tuësday’ as a three-syllable word in order to attend this event
· Any logs not including at least one diæresis will be deleted
· The previous two rules constitute ALRs and should therefore be disregarded
