Geocaching HQ Admin: From June 06, 2018 until March 06, 2019, Geocaching HQ conducted an Augmented Reality (AR) experiment. During that time, cache owners were allowed to submit Mystery Caches that required the finder to download and use an AR app to find the cache. The goal of the experiment was to see how the geocaching community would use AR technology. Cache owners placed more than 600 AR caches around the world!

Unfortunately, the AR apps which met HQ’s requirements for the experiment have been or are currently in the process of being discontinued. As a result, it is currently not possible for finders to have the AR experience that was originally intended. Therefore, HQ has decided to archive all active AR caches placed during the experiment period. We are respectfully requesting that all AR cache owners please remove the cache container and contents as soon as possible.

As technology evolves, we look forward to seeing how Augmented Reality might have future applications for geocaching. Thank you to all cache owners who participated in the experiment!

Welcome to the Augmented Reality.

This geocache is part of an experiment that allows the use of Augmented Reality (AR) apps to find the cache (see the HELP centre article). At the end of this experiment, Geocaching HQ will decide if this cache will be grandfathered or archived. Geocaching HQ reserves the right to archive this cache at any time if conditions change. If you have found this cache and would like to give feedback on your experience, fill out this survey.

Augmented Reality is a new phenomenon which takes the image that your mobile device sees and is able to add in extra things for you to interact with. Currently much of the software that is available to produce Augmented Reality is a bit buggy. It crashes quite regularly and uses up a lot of mobile data when being played. There is definitely a LOT of potential though for Augmented Reality to add to the geocaching experience in the future so this is certainly early stages.

To keep your experience as bug free as possible, I have created an Augmented Reality cache which is extremely simple. It involves visiting 5 different virtual WPs in order to collect all of the needed information to find the final stage. You need to follow the WPs in order; otherwise the experience will not work. Start at the posted coordinates where you will find the first Charter. Chat with the character and then move on to the other, and so forth. In order you need to find the following Charters...

To play this Augmented Reality geocache you will need to download an app called "metaverse". It is available on both ~~android~~ and ios devices.

You will also need a GPS or GPS enabled smart phone or tablet to locate the locations.
A pen and paper will be handy for taking notes of the clues and also the coordinates for the final location.
A phone that is capable of taking pictures with Front-facing camera.

Update 06.01.2024, For some time now you cannot download the app for android from a Play Store, it's available only for iOS on App Store. If you still want to download the app for Android you can download it as an .apk file from this link: Android
