Geocache Description:

This challenge was created and placed in homage to GC12, the oldest active geocache in Oregon, the birthplace of geocaching.

This cache is located at the posted coordinates. You may sign the log at any time but to log the find, you must do the following:

  • Find the the oldest cache in at least 10 of the US states. For the purpose of this challenge, District of Columbia also qualifies, so you can use any 10 of the "51" states.
  • A qualifying cache must be the oldest in the state at the time of your find.
  • It does not matter if your find has since been archived.
  • Use the challenge checker to verify that you meet the requirements and list the qualifying caches in your log.

PGC Checker

The challenge checker follows specific, unyielding rules to determine which caches qualify as the oldest cache in a state. Here are the list of allowable exceptions:

  • Montana – The checker considers Missouri Headwaters (GC493) to be the oldest cache in Montana. However, Fairweather (GC492) has the same published hidden date of 03/14/2001. The CO will accept either as a qualifying cache for Montana.
  • Ohio – The checker considers Ancient Lake (GC2DBE) to be the oldest cache in Ohio due to its published hidden date of 01/23/2001. However, there is compelling evidence to suggest that its actual publication date was much later and the oldest active cache in Ohio is actually Shawnee Lookout Cache (GC31A). (The Shawnee Lookout Cache page explains everything.) The CO will accept either as a qualifying cache for Ohio.
  • Virginia – The checker considers Burke Lake Park (GC175) to be the oldest cache in Virginia due to its published hidden date of 12/17/2000. It is a replacement for the original Burke Lake Park (GCEE) and was backdated to match the published hidden date for GCEE. However, Elvis Confluence (GC135) was published before GC175, lending an argument for it being the oldest active geocache in Virginia. The CO will accept either as a qualifying cache for Virginia.

Approach this cache from GC12. It is a 30 caliber ammo box. I have created a bookmark list of oldest caches in each state for your convenience.
