Geocache Description:

This is a NYS Parks Taconic Region Challenge cache!

Description: This cache is located slightly east of the Buttermilk Hill summit and affords great views to the East, overlooking Hawthorne, NY.
Buttermilk Hill, a high rocky ridge at the northeastern part of the preserve, is said to get its name from the turbulent period of the American Revolutionary War, when local farmers hid their dairy cattle on the ridge to protect them from marauding soldiers. The hill is referred to in an adapted Irish song:

Here I sit on Buttermilk Hill,
Who should blame me cry my fill?
And every tear would work a mill,
Johnny has gone for a soldier.

On top of Buttermilk Hill you can find the oldest existing triangulation station/benchmark in the country. It was placed in1833.  For those of you interested in benchmark-hunting, this benchmark is considered the “holy grail” of benchmarks.  You can reach it by finding the grassy offshoot of the main trail and taking it up to the summit.  The historic benchmark is located at N 41 06.606 W 073 48.624 and is a pipe set in a rock outcrop.

Nearby, you will find white oaks, maples, native poison ivy, burning bush, multiflora, and other plants.

Dogs are allowed on leash.

There is a $6 daily parking fee, unless you have a New York State Empire Pass, A Golden Park Pass, or a Group/Individual Access Pass.

Additional Information:  Observe all parking signs on Route 448.  Trail Maps available at Main Parking/Welcome Center. Thank you to West End 2 for placing and maintaining all geocaches in this series.
